A Little Sleight of Hand with a Big Coin

Postby MagicbyAlfred » January 28th, 2022, 9:31 pm

I recently received a lovely replica of a U.S. Morgan Silver Dollar, in jumbo size, as a gift from my friend, Tom Ladshaw, who is a fine professional magician and ventriloquist. So I was inspired to work out a quickie little routine using just the jumbo coin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzxM6YZpdAY

I learned some of the moves I'm using in the routine from Gary Kurtz many years ago. I'm pretty sure that many of the members here have seen Gary's fabulous routine with a jumbo coin, which he calls, "Flurious." I know that what I'm doing here cannot compare to the mastery exhibited by Gary, but I had fun doing this and I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Thank you very much, Roy!

*By the way, based on your recommendation on another forum a year or so ago, I purchased "Little Bunny's Card Trick," by Goldman. The routine provides a splendid opportunity for loads of gags and entertainment -- and strong magic too. I had long performed Aronson's Shuffle-Bored, which, of course, is great, but this is way more fun. It has been fabulous for kids (and even for the kid in the adults).

Very smooth. The musical accompaniment is great.
Effect and method are inextricably linked.

Thank you for your kind words, Ketterfelto! I originally did a couple takes with my phone camera with no music and then realized that some uptempo jazz would probably be a good accompaniment to the brisk pacing. Since I did this little video, which was a very good learning tool, I came up with a 3 more sequences to add to the routine, including a complete vanish to end it. I'm excited to work those moves in and get them down. I often go on to do sleights with a jumbo coin after producing it as the kicker in a routine such as Matrix or Copper, Silver, Brass Transposition -- angles permitting, of course. But if I'm working behind the bar or walking around the room with no one behind me, I do the routine like in the video, as just some stand-alone eye candy, and laymen seem to really like it.

I've just watched it with my family ^_^

My son (8) told me:
"how the hell does he hide such a big coin?!"
So you can be sure you did a really good performance job! :-))
My wife said:
"that nice music fits very well"

I immediately pushed the thumb-up bottom as I love the routine too! ;-)

Thank you for making and uploaded it, Alfred!

Paco,

Thank you very much for your kind comments about my work-in-progress (I have since added three more sequences to the routine). I'm happy that your family enjoyed it too. Your kindness, support and generosity of spirt are like a rare, glittering jewel in this world. And your love and passion for magic, along with your exceptional creativity, have been an inspiration to me. I truly hope that some day we can meet in person, and wile away the hours sipping coffee and getting lost in the magic.

In the mid 90s I did a cut down version of Flourious that I called Flour. I really enjoyed messing around with the jumbo coins, but stopped a while back. Still can't remember why...

Alfred, You have me dusting off my Jumbo Coins and pulling out "Unexplainable Acts" by Kurtz. I forgot how much fun that was to work on.

Great to hear, Roy! It is good clean fun, gratifying, and those you perform it for will love it too!

Never too late to get back into it. I often work in some noisy places and it's nice to be able to have something where there's no patter needed and that can be seen clearly by a bunch of people from a good distance away. Rope magic can be great for that too.
