"A Christmas Carol Card Trick".

Postby Paco Nagata » December 15th, 2020, 1:24 am

I only wanted to share a new card magic routine I devised recently.
I called it "A Christmas Carol Card Trick."

I've performed it twices. The first one on November 8th, in the 7 birthday party of my son, and the second one on this December 6th. for a few friends.

Well, my friends liked it, so I thought it wasn't bad. The trick is described in 4 PDF pages.
It is almost impromptu.

I hope you enjoy it, or find it helpful somehow :-)

Paco, I enjoyed reading your Christmas Carol card trick. What a wonderful idea to create a script based on Charles Dicken's classic novel. And with the Holiday season at its peak, the timing is perfect for the creation and performance of this dramatic routine. Almost everyone is familiar with the story, as it is not only a classic of literature, but has been made into a movie and also been done countless times as a play all over the world. It was thoughtful of you to share your creation, and I would say that because of your generosity, unlike Scrooge, you will not have to worry about any visits from ghosts this Christmas. The one spirit that counts most is the spirit of giving, at Christmas, and all year round, and it is important to remember that the greatest gift of all costs nothing - the gift of Love. I hope you and your family have a magical Christmas and that you knock their stockings off with another great show!

Thank you so much for this beautiful post, Alfred!

I love this novel. Curiously it was the first novel I tried to read in English when I was teenager.

Last Christmas I watched Robert Zemeckis' animation movie about the book, with my family, so my son already knows about the story and enjoyed the card magic routine.
The thing is that he surprised me by suggesting me to create another card magic routine about "Polar Express"! (Talking about Zemeckis : - O)
Well, you see that children always want more ^_^

I wish you too a Christmas as magical as possible, Alfred!

Ok! I'll do it.
Anyway, tomorrow morning (in Spain) I'll try to add pictures to the text of the card trick and update the link, in order to make it easier to understand.

Thank you very much for your interest!

Paco, I wanted to do a little follow-up on my earlier comment. I think you've hit upon the essence of commercial card magic with your adaptation. Dickens' story was so popular that the first edition was sold out before Christmas, 1843, the year it was published. It has never been out of print since. Also Dickens adapted the novella for a "listening" audience, and did many public readings, which enabled him to share it with minions of people who couldn't read. But perhaps the most striking thing concerning A Christmas Carol, other than the brilliance of the work, itself, is the literally thousands of adaptations and derivative works that have been generated across the spectrum of virtually every artistic medium. This includes scores of paintings (https://fineartamerica.com/art/painting ... tmas+carol), derivative literary works, and innumerable adaptations for the theatre, film, animated film, television, radio, comic strips, sound recordings, parody, opera, ballet, and even video games.

I think Dickens would be proud that you have made the magic of his story come alive in the art of legerdemain.

Gee whiz!

I knew it was popular but not so much ^_^'

Thanks a lot for those great piece of information, Alfred!

Only I have to improve the description...
Joe (mystre71) has found difficulties to understand the procedure. The routine is alright, but my explanation has some linguistic problems that I will correct as soon as I can.
I talked about adding some pictures, but after reading Joe's PM about his confusing, I have noticed that the problem has anything to do with images, since I don't describe any new technique, but just a good combination of some well known great sleights to create a nice stortelling routine.
So, I will improve my explanation and let you know right after updating it.

I'm sorry that for the time being I'm ZERO at new technologies like making videos and upload them.
Actually I don't have time to learn how to do it.

Done!

I've improved the explanation of the trick.

I have added some points that I took for granted that were understood.

I hope it is ok for everyone that want to read (and understand) it :-)

Thanks a lot for letting me know the points difficult to understand, Joe!

I appreciate it!

By the way, I have updated it,
so, the original link in the first post of this thread will lead you to the new better version.
