That appears to just one part of a John Carney routine. I know I have read an explanation for this somewhere but I can't seem to remember where at the moment. I'm thinking it was The Collected Almanac, but I'm not sure.

John Carney uses that move in his routine "Soft Glass" from Carneycopia; however, the move certainly predates that publication. (No references for the move were included in the write up).
