Adds To 13 Stack

Postby Bob Farmer » July 11th, 2005, 8:56 am

Does this sound familiar:

Shuffle a deck of cards, then arrange the pairs so each pair totals 13. The pairs are not related to each other in any way, they appear in random order, but each pair is the same suit.

For example, (6H+7H), (5C+8C), etc.

I recall reading some where that this was published at the turn of the century. Anybody know?

I think Annemann used this kind of set-up (See 202 methods of forcing) but we can't say it was the turn of the century.

The Annemann idea was a full deck stack where ANY two cards added to 13 or 14 (I think).

The stack I'm thinking of uses the sum of 13 secretly. For example, if one card of the pair is removed you immediately know the other card of the pair.

But the pairs are not related to each other in any way -- so it's not a full deck stack.

And, of course, I was referring to the turn of century in 1901 (not 2001).

Charles Jordan's 'Fate and the Joker' may be what Bob is referring to. It uses a deck stacked in pairs - each pair adds up to fourteen, and each pair consists of either a club-spade or a heart-diamond combination.

This effect was included in "CHARLES JORDAN'S BEST CARD TRICKS" (1992).

John, thanks for the reference. I looked it up and it is very interesting. It is very close to what I was thinking about, however, I think there may be an earlier reference in one of those old magic magazines like Stanyon's MAGIC.

It's a fast easy way of clocking the deck.

You can let your victim shuffle once, and take one card out and put it in his pocket.

In the course of looking through the deck, during which you say you're memorizing the deck, you can fix any of the pairs displaced in the shuffle, and then reveal that you have used your astonishing calculating powers to determine the one missing card.

Then you say, "Now we'll do it the fast way, using super mental powers.."

They just pull a card out of the middle of the deck and hand you the deck, and if you like, you can [ahem] shuffle yourself, and you will see the missing card real fast.

One thing you can do is locate the three mates, put three piles on the table, and turn up the top cards saying"It's not the four of hearts, the four of spades, or the four of diamonds, so it must be the four of clubs."

Bob,

I don't a copy of Karl Fulves' "Ellis Stanyons Best Card Tricks", but it may provide the reference that you're searching for.
