Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
How about Jon Allen's "Double Back".
Two cards change places with the cards held in the spectator's hands. Yes, one card is gaffed, but The magician ends up holding it, and it can be handled quite naturally.
Properly done, spectators scream!

Gotta go with E&W's Color Monte. Arthur Emerson told me he put his children thru college with that one trick alone.
Always got my money's worth out of Sidewalk Shuffle.
Then there's Backflips. I proposed to my wife with that trick. At the end when the backs chage, I wrote Will You Marry Me on each of the 4 cards. Talk about a pressure!

Peter Samelson's "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" is a true piece of close-up theater IMHO. It is a presentation for "Wild Card" and can be found in Mr. Samelson's book aptly titled, "Theatrical Close-Up".
Sadly, my copy of this book went the way of all books lent, i.e. it didn't come back from the lendee and now I'll have to suffer the e-bay consequences of my actions :( .
I used this back in my demonstrator days at Magicland in Dallas. I sold a lot of "Wild Card" sets ;) .

I would have to cast my vote for Gypsy Curse with a close second for Mexican Monte from the Karl Fulves pamplet of the same name...I do a handling by the late Larry West.

Two of my favorites are Daryl's "Chameleon Cards" (though not truly "gaffed" I've been doing it on and off for 20 years or so) a beautiful combination of an elegant handling with strong visual magic. My second (newest) favorite is Bob Farmer's "Bammo Monte Monster". Just a great fun trick to perform and for spectators to participate in.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I'm with Richard - WILD WILD WEST was (and is) a killer packet trick.
Around the same time I also used to do Edward T. Hollins's FLIPPED OUT quite a bit, a "twisting-the-aces" type effect with multiple changes on both the backs and faces of the cards.
On a related subject, whatever happened to Magic Ronnay?

gaffed...color monte, gypsy curse, skinner's 3 card monte and Peter Duffies-Pick me Pick me not.
Ungaffed...and leaves you clean and the audience dumbfounded...Aldo Colombini's Jumbo Coincidence. The reaction I get from this trick is huge...two great climaxes. Easy to do and kills.

Glenn's statement about the Aldo Colombini "Jumbo Coincidence" is right on! You can get it from Meir Yedid! It is one of my favorites.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
The reaction from "Jumbo Coincidence" is well out of proportion to the work required.
It's also one of those routines that becomes stronger because the audience guesses what is about to happen as the second climax is unfolding.
"No way" and expletives usually follow.

I'm with Mediocre onthis one. I love performing Double Back. Not too many packet tricks involve the audience directly. DB gets them involved, takes them down the garden path, then whacks them over the head with an impossible transposition.
Some people have said you can get the same effect (DDLT) with regular cards. However, you cannot get the visual transformation that you get with gimmicked cards.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
Perhaps a dumb question. I can't tell from the sales site for Jumbo Coincidence - is this done with full "jumbo cards" or the half size jumbos? Thanks.

I've enjoyed performing "Gypsy Curse" over the years...Derek Dingle's routine in particular.
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
NFW is an all-time favorite.. although lately I've been performing Bob Solari's Double Barrel. I love the dumb gimmick. Almost feel like a kid when I use it.. but it fools everyone so bad...
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
My fav. has to be Simon Aronson's red see passover. I believe it is the greatest gaffed card trick ever. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and find someone who does it and get the pants fooled off of you before you buy it.

I am a HUGE fan of Color Monte...it's really something unexpected. Actually, it's the only packet trick I ALWAYS carry on me in corporate venues...

Michel Huot is forgetting his own delightful little packet trick, "I Really Knew It," from SEVEN BY MICHEL HUOT. But that's just the kind of guy he is. Humble... And forgetful... And kind of smelly...

I always enjoyed the Tamariz Rabbits. One of the few card tricks that can play for kids and still entertain old guys.

Speaking of packet tricks with rabbits;
Years ago....
Steve Dushek released a WONDERFUL routine (better than the forementioned Tamariz' effect IMO.)
Alas, the name of the Dushek routine escapes me...
Bonus points go to anyone who can name this effect.
And extra double points to anyone who can tell me if/where this routine is available (I wouldn't mind putting that 'piece' back in the repetoire... great effect for family groups.)

The name of the Steve Dusheck packet trick which you were referring to is called "Rabbit Roulette". He now has a version of it using buisness cards.

I agree on the fact that "twisted sisters" is hard to beat.Originally posted by Sterling52:
"Twisted Sister" is hard to beat, esp. if a Himber wallet is used to switch out the "dirty" cards to end clean.
But the "Himber-wallet" does not make any sense in this routine unless one has many Himber wallets available for every possibile outcome. There are six Jokers plus one (faked) red and one (faked) black queen left at the end. But we do not know in advance, which queens it will be to load the HW accordingly.
This depends on the presentation. The way I do it, the first choice is absolutely free. This is a natural 25 % chance.Originally posted by David Eldridge:
I think that B'wave is the better from a psychological stand point. In T.S. you have at least a 50/50 chance of hitting at least one card. In B'wave, you have a 25% chance of hitting the card, and if you miss, there is no out(as far as the spectators are concerned).
The second choice is more difficult. I want it to be perceived as a 25 % choice as well. An example: If the first choice was the queen of diamonds, this is what I would say to spectator Nr.2:
"The first lady freely picked the queen of diamonds. A RED queen. Would you please pick a DIFFERENT card?"
The natural odds are 2:1 that she picks spades or clubs which is what we need. Actually, the wording subtly forces her not to pick the queen of hearts, because in her imagination spades and clubs are more "different" due to the different colour.
What happens on a bad day? If she picks the queen of heart I have a decent "out" by saying:
"No, the first spectator picked a red card, would you please name a different colour?" This is not a desired outcome, but it is acceptable and I can tell from many performances that I do not need it much.
I enjoy taking little risks and I think that this approach is superior to the standard ruse ("To avoid picking the same card would one of you pick a red card and the other a black card."
"Thank You, John Bannon!"

:whack: Well bop me over the head with a hammer[lol]...I stand corrected "Color Monte" is gaff-less...so "Trick-Kards" is one of my favorites because it was Trost who helped kindle my interest in card magic...his approach to card magic always instilled simplicity, subtlety and principles rather than knuckle-busting sleight-of-hand to come up with entertaining card magic!Originally posted by Glenn Godsey:

My favorite gaffed packet tricks...
Harry Anderson - The Last Monte - (with the torn corner finish), The Shadow Card, Gang of Four
Johnny Thompson - Prowling Jokers
Gordon Bean - Joker Joker, Limited Edition (old & new)
Mike Skinner - Ultimate 3 Card Monte
Bro. John Hamman - Final Aces
and perhaps not exactly a "gaffed packet trick" per se but...

Twisted Sisters and Flipped Out Fours both nailed me to the wall when I first saw them. Even though I knew the general principle and method of both...sigh, I fell in love and have been doing them both ever since.
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
A marketed trick where five sad rabbits were shown which changes to five smiling rabbits. This is one of those few card magic with pictures.

I'd say that Jennings' "Pineapple Surprise" is one of the best. A real good magical kick in the head.

I like Jim Swain's "Capitulating Queens." But you have to be careful: Your Elmsly Counts have to be on the money because all the backs are different. I had one spectator speculate that there were eight cards in play, but it uses only five. The Ascanio display at the end is a nice way to demolish the idea that "extra" cards in play.

I'd much rather regret something I've done than something I was too afraid to do.
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I don't do many gaffed anything. But Gordon Bean's Bikers is pretty kick ass. It is self contained, logically correct, and instantly resettable. It is the only gaffed trick I currently perform, and often.
I'd recommend it in a heartbeat!
