I thought it was the phenomenon usually experienced in desert regions.

good trick,but eventually they break,i have had 3 Mirages before and all 3 have gone kaput!

Then you are not handling them properly. While I have 3, I've been using the same one with no problem for years.

Not forgetting the blades for the penetration tend to snap

I haven't had that happen. I insert the blade into the slot just a bit, then grasp it at center between thumb and first finger, just above the slot, and push straight down. When it moves in, I move my hand up a half inch, grasp it the same way, and push down again. This creates a downward pressure at the strongest point and will avoid damaging the "blade."
