A Tenyo "Mirage" on eBay sold for a mere $255 today. Prices are indeed coming down.

I noticed on eBay that a year ago there was a group of five tenyo tricks, including a Mirage new in box, with a buy-it-now of $99 for the lot. Was that some kind of scam?

"Mirage" doesn't come in a box. It came on a blister card.
I don't know of any counterfeits of "Mirage," and it's possible few people noticed it and someone got lucky.

It happens.

Yes, but no more than usual. My pricing data shows fluctuations throughout the years that I have been tracking Tenyo eBay closings.

July through August prices tend to be down, October, November, and especially December prices tend to be up.

I should point out that when I wrote "new in box" I was just paraphrasing from memory. It may well have said "new in original packaging" or something like that and I didn't pay attention. All I remember is that it claimed to be new.

I was curious, so I looked this up.

If this is someone's favorite trick, I don't mean to hurt your feelings for what I'm about to say. It just seems strange--huge box that is conveniently fat in the middle all for a thin paper bill. IMHO, Tenyo has put out many more deceptive penetrations. Why is Mirage so popular? Was it a limited edition?

It is one of my favorite Tenyo tricks.
It was not a limited edition.

Yes, it's a weird huge plastic box. :D
