I appreciate Will Houston's recent review of Mark Forsyth's The Elements of Eloquence.
I raved about this book to my friends over Xmas.

Those unfamiliar Ancient Greek terms like polyptoton, merism, aposiopesis, hyperbaton , anadiplosis, hendiadys seem daunting.
But you know many of them already without realising it!

This book explains the rhetorical tricks that writers use - from Shakespeare to John Lennon.

Thankfully, you don't have to be a literary theorist to understand the content.
if you can read Genii magazine, then you should be able to digest Mark's book.

The author also has an informative blog, The Inky Fool:

I was surprised, and very pleased, to see Mark Forsyth mentioned on the Genii Forum.

I have always had a keen interest in etymology (and language in general) and have followed the highly entertaining Inkyfool blog for some time.

I would also highly recommend Mr Forsyth's other books, The Etymologicon and The Horologicon.

Cheers
