Money Transfer by Daryl
Money Transfer by Daryl
Is this the same routine that Jim Patton promised for Magicana when he was writing it but never appeared?

If it makes you think more of me, then yes...

Don't know ... you'd have to ask Patton or Daryl.

I enjoyed the write up and really liked the idea of shifting the puzzle into a trick. Then two days later I received Antinomy, and there was the same puzzle turned into a trick. This is the kind of thing that will give the credit historians fits!

Eric, Antinomy 3 hasn't shown up here yet: who contributed the item?

"Hotel Bills" by Norman Beck was contributed to the latest issue of Antinomy. The presentation is built around the same brain teaser. Both routines illustrate the puzzle but with differing methods. No date was given for the origination of Mr. Becks routine but Daryl first published "A Puzzling Bill Vanish" in his 1992 F.F.F.F. Lecture notes (still available from from Daryl at www.foolerdoolers.com )

As Frank points out, the two do have different methods. The Beck version includes a list of similar tricks that are either based on puzzles or use gaffed bills.
My gut feel is that the Daryl trick will be more useful because it could be impromptu - assuming there are any magicians that have $29 in their wallet.

Re: Money Transfer by Daryl
There seems to be some confusion with the trick titles here. "Money Transfer" is Daryl's three-coins-across routine. "Diminishing Returns" is the name of his riddle-based bill routine.
Regarding Norman Beck, given that Daryl's 1992 four-F lecture notes weren't widely distributed, I'm not surprised he wasn't aware of the precedent. That's why we're not sending any of our goons over to straighten him out. Plus the goons are at home tonight watching "Desperate Housewives." We really have to get better goons...

My apologies - I did confuse the trick titles. I saw the post and immediately thought of the shortchanging trick. Dagnabbit, there goes my bid to be the next Memory King.

Hi;
I'm making this up with big bills (about twice the regular size). I found them at Dollar General Store for (you guessed it) $1.00. You get a packet of several $1, $5, $10, $20 ... I plan on using it in a college mathematics class to illustrate how confusing everyday life can be if you don't understand math.(I'm the teacher!) It probably will also go into my mathemagic presentation.

Re: Money Transfer by Daryl
I'll be interested to find out if it's possible to do that Francis Carlyle count with oversized bills.
Re: Money Transfer by Daryl
i have noticed that when the large bills are used, the trick is not as effective...
Example,, the Larry West bill counting trick i carry in my wallet...it is a killer effect, always eliciting eyepopping reactions...
when i try it with large bills, ala Visit from Rocco, it doesnt play nearly as well.
Not sure of the reason, but i can only guess that real money is real money, large bills are magic props..
anyone else experience this?

Doc,
I think that you've hit the nail on the head! It is how the audience thinks.
#1. Big money must be gimmicked money
and
#2. If this is something that I have on me, I might could do the trick too. (I have hope! So I'm watching.)
Rattle my cage when you can. I haven't heard from you since Atlanta. I need you at a convention May 2006. Several of the "Outlaws" plan to be there. Many of the details are already known.
I also need to come your way near Ft. Collins. (My daugher lives out there.)
