2012 Golden Gate Gathering

Postby Kent Gunn » June 5th, 2012, 4:59 pm

This year we have:

David Regal
Lance Pierce
Wayne Houchin
Hank Miller
Jared Kopf and
Tony Cabral

It's August 9, 10 and 11.

On the 12th Dani DaOrtiz will be giving a lecture and workshop. This event is financially seperate from my convention. Should all be one giant good time though.

Questions, ask away or go to:

www.goldengategathering.com

We are not a conventional convention . . . Our dealer room consists of Byron Walker's stock of old magic books. That's it.

It's pretty much all close-up guys. If you don't like close-up magic . . . don't come.

There's a great open lobby area where we session 'til about midnight. Then I've a giant suite reserved where the sessioning goes on entirely too long.

We never get close to 100 attendees. We lose money every single year. It's a darned fine time.

Let me know if you're interested.

What's with all the rubber chickens?
How far are you from San Francisco?

One of our attendees is a photographer with a penchant for . . . rubber chickens.

San Francisco is 20 miles north of the hotel. It's a great locale for a convention if you bring the family. Lots and lots of stuff for them to do in the city.

It's exactly 25.5 miles to the Disney Museum.

Gary,

I'm not the web guy for the site. I see the confusion factor though.

I had nothing to do with Dani's lecture or appearance. It's a separate entity from the Gathering . . . Never really liked add-on events. A huge number of people are excited to listen to him though, me included.

His lecture is Sunday from 10 to 12. It's one price. Then a significantly longer session goes down for a larger fee. I will get the website to be more clear.

Thank you Gary.

One of our performers, Wayne Houchin got a gig in the UK that was just too good. He was still willing to come out and lecture for us, because he's a good guy. Our thing is all about the sessioning though.

His replacement is one of my personal heroes. I'm overwhelmed he's coming. His books, especially "At the Card Table", sustained me over many a dreary patrol on our countries submarines.

Yeah, we got Darwin Ortiz coming.

Hi Richard,
I'm the guy taking rubber chicken pictures. I saw that David Regal always had people trying to strangle him so I decided to have people pose with RC (Rubber Chicken).

Enjoy your magazine and the site. Sending you a collage of some of the magicians who have posed with RC.

All the best,
Gary

And . . .

Unless you're a rubber chicken, registrations are closed. We have no more room at the inn or in the lecture room.

The Golden Gate Gatherer.

PS This is the last year I'm running this shindig. Those Genii-ites who've supported us in the past, rest assured that Dorian Rhodell, Theron Schaub and David Nelson will continue the convention. I'll be in Florida and will be unable to oversee/control/screw things up.

Four more days and counting.

I'm as excited by the guys who are attending/hanging out at GGG as I am with the stellar lecturer lineup.

Holy Moley, Batman, (Yeah I know that was Captain Marvel's thing.)

This thing is upon us. Some of our long-lost conventioneers are rolling in a day or two early for this thing.

The back house, sans furniture is filling up with buskers, malcontents and lawyers. I hope they don't think they can cook back there.

GGG 6 - The Escape - goes down, officially in about three days.

The Monday after this event, the packers come, Wednesday of next week, I dope up the cat and dog and get on a plane.

See ya, SF Bay Area, Hello Tampa Bay.

At least I'll be driving distance from the Genii Bash.

Hopefully you will still attend.

I always want to go to this, but every year that I promise myself (and/or you) that I will make it, something happens to screw it up. This year the wife has decided to mess up her foot and cannot get around well at all, so I'm needed here (for a change).

So I am NOT coming next year. Ain't gonna happen. No way Jose.

Dustin,

I hope I can get back as well.

I will meet you at the Genii bash. I hope you can pick me out of the crowd. I have met your boss on a couple of occasions. I'll get him to introduce us.

A grand time will be had by all. I suspect the 75th Anniversary bash will make other conventions pale in comparison.

And as the cash bar is in the dealers room, I wont have far to go. I have a few very new items to show ya Dustin. Some are I think quite unique.

I'm truly sorry that I cannot attend the GGG this year. There is such a great line-up (not sure which is greater... the lecturers or the attendees!).

Anyway... I hope to meet up with many of you at the Genii birthday bash. That's the one event this year that has my full attention and support.

Maybe next year...

I wanted to throw out a huge "Thank You" to Kent Gunn and his crew for putting on a fantastic get together. I had a wonderful time and had the pleasure of meeting many people that I've only known online over the years. The lecturers were uniformly excellent, there was no shortage of tables, hospitality suites, etc. for sessioning purposes and I think everyone had a hell of a good time.

Here's a photo that captures one of one of my fondest memories of the convention (Jack Carpenter, Darwin Ortiz, Jason England, with Derek Delgaudio out of frame to the right, Ricky Smith in the background)

And yes, Tony Miller's new wallets (very unique) were extremely impressive. Not just mechanically, but in the use of a special material (in one wallet) that allows for incredibly free handling. The workmanship /cleverness/practicality of his wallets is really something to see.

Tony Miller is making great wallets, and he's going to have some unique new models at the Genii Bash.
