Write Angle by Jesse Feinberg DVD 50 minutes running time - $24 available from Blacks Magic Group at www.blacksmagicgroup.com . Dealers may purchase from Murphys Magic Supplies, Inc. (916) 853-9292 www.murphysmagicsupplies.com .

The effect is that the performer holds a Bic pen by the fingertips of one hand. Upon command, the pen visibly bends upwards into a 90 angle. Mr. Feinberg allows the spectators to examine the pen. You may watch the performance segment from the DVD on YouTube (where else?) at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVIkkFhnJbU . This clip will also show you the quality of the production, and the music you will hear during the entire DVD.

The effect is not new. Most will probably be familiar with the old nugget using a nail. The method is a different application of that used in another pen which has been on the market for some time. This would probably be best as an opener since one must arrange the pen in their hand. It cant just simply be pulled out of your pocket ready to go. Although I have seen statements that this can be performed surrounded, I believe it would be quite risky to do so. A big point is made that the bent pen can immediately be examined. Indeed it can be, but all should be aware that the pen is not completely innocent and there is not 100% certainly that the spectator would not detect that something was different other than the bend. You will be running a bit of a buff and you will want to get your pen back.

Mr. Feinbergs handling is not difficult once you are ready to begin. He does demonstrate a not too convincing get ready. Clearly, this is the weakest part of the handling. The actual bending is very starling and will provoke a strong reaction with everyone wanting to see the pen immediately. There is a bit of a clean-up, but as one can see in the above clip, the handling provides a decent way to do this. It should be noted that the pen bends upwards, not downwards so the magician is also overcoming the forces of gravity as well as causing the pen to bend. While the visible bend is quite remarkable, the presentation smacks more of a puzzle than a magic effect. I am sure that with a better presentation, this effect would be greatly improved.

While the running time of the DVD is stated to be approximately 50 minutes, this includes 10 minutes of advertisements for Blacks Magic Group products. Of the remaining 40 minutes, after the above performance segment, introduction, outtakes, materials needed, credits, and final thoughts, approximately 20 minutes is taken with instructions on how to gimmick things in order to perform the effect. You will need to spend something in the neighborhood of $10 in order to make your own gaff. Making the gaff is not difficult and the instructions are very thorough. The pen is also sold with a two page set of instructions for $39.95. Therefore, if you want a bending pen in your magical repertoire, you can either make it yourself with the DVD for a total investment of around $35 or buy the gaffed pen without a DVD for $5 more. The entire effect takes about 30 to 45 seconds, but it is visually strong.

This is another one trick DVD too bad Mr. Feinberg and the Blacks Magic Group didnt combine all of his pen effects (such as CigaPen, MagiCap, and the much maligned Pen thru Arm) into one DVD. Doing so would have certainly given purchasers much more value for their money.
