So, you say you crave to add some flash paper magic to your act, eh Sparky? Well, youve come to the right place. This DVD is a greatest hits collection of Jay Sankeys (previously released) flash paper effects. All of the effects are good, and some are very good indeed.

This was a one camera shoot that took place in a small, cluttered, well-lighted studio. The video resolution and audio fidelity are very good. The camera work is fair. At least were not in Jays kitchen.

On the Sankey Manic Meter (1-5), Jay is a relatively subdued 2.5, with an occasional spike to 4.

As usual, Jay performs and explains the effects very well. He offers numerous clever tips, and he wisely advises pyro tyros to use flash paper effects sparingly. There is a lot of solid material on one fast-paced disk, and the price is right.

Tom, could you give some details of the plots of the effects you like, and also tell us about some of the items you didn't like and why?

Richard,

I liked all of the effects. There wasnt a stinker in the bunch. Here are descriptions of my favorites:

Playing Card Revelation The participant selects a card and it is tabled face-down, without her seeing it. A glass is placed atop the card. The performer displays a piece of paper upon which is written the 4 suits and the 13 values. He balls up the paper, lights it and drops it into the glass. Upon opening the paper it is seen that all of the other suits and values have been are burned away except for say the 6 and the Club. When the participants card is removed from beneath the glass, it is the 6 of Clubs.

Firefly A participant initials a dime, which is wrapped in paper, secured with a paperclip, and held by her. The performer borrows and holds a penny. The participant lights the paper, which burns away, revealing that she is now holding the penny. The performer opens his hand, revealing the participants initialed dime.

Blaze of Glory The performer tables a prediction envelope. A card is selected and returned to the deck. The performer removes a piece of paper from the envelope. He opens it to reveal that he has successfully predicted the participants card. He folds the paper and lights it. In a flash, he is now holding a folded card, which he unfolds to display that it is her selected card. (Since there is no switch, I would immediately hand her the card and let her discover the surprise.)

Signed, Singed & Delivered The participant initials a piece of paper, which is balled up and placed in her hand. The performer initials a piece of paper and balls it up. He lights the paper and drops it into a glass. He removes the smoldering ball, unwraps it and reveals that it is the participants initialed paper. She opens her hand to discover his initialed paper.

The Phoenix Effect A card is freely selected and lost in the deck. The performer displays an indifferent card, which the participant signs on the back. Before the ink can dry, the performer grabs a tissue and wipes the ink completely off of the card, leaving him with an ink-smeared tissue. He burns the tissue over the deck. The performer spreads through the deck and reveals the participants card, complete with signature on the back.

Good stuff.

Tom
