Wenii Magazine

Postby Joe Lyons » January 15th, 2020, 12:29 pm

Finally picked up a copy of Wenii magazine.

I just started it and am already laughing out loud.

Richard you should get permission to include this in the digital Genii archives.

I've not seen Wenii, but I've heard it's a lot less scatalogical than Majoke.

Maybe one day I'll find a copy...

Wenii was not published by the Larsen family. We don't own the rights. Wenii was quite funny. MAJOKE was not.

Lloyd Jones's review in Genii started off, "Here I sit with my Wenii in hand . . . "

The best joke in Wenii was the add for the magician naming service...

When Walt Lees was the editor of the magazine of Repro 71, each Christmas for five years included a bonus fake magazine, a send-up of then current British magazines, Abra and The Budget, the two that first come to mind. Wonderful parodies. I have the full set. And I'm pretty sure I have Wenii too.

A few headings and/or columnists for those who haven't seen it:

The Wenii Sqeaks

Is Version Touched

Harry Hujuini - The Missing Link by Walter Gibbon

Knights in the Magic Closet

Paula & Vase by Paul Unborne

Impossible Table Pass by Fred Narlo

The Reel Jerks by Pete Borrow

Grand Theft Psychic by Max Mayhem

Light From The Lap by Floyd Clones

Ian, copies surface on Ebay and Bradbury's list "periodically".

I gave my copy to a dear friend thinking that I had a duplicate. I didn't. [sigh]

I remember well when Wenii came out. There were people unhappy that they were not included in its satire. When Majoke came out, it was so mean spirited that people were unhappy that they were in it. That sums up the difference between the styles and quality of the two publications.

Absconded with your only copy? Sounds more like a rat than a deer to me…

Repro also produced a spoof edition of the British Ring Convention Brochure. I have that lying around somewhere.

I don't have "Wenii" any more, but I did think it was humorous. I vaguely recall mention of some dispute over a card move leading to gunfire.

I did have "Majoke" at one time, but I can't recall anything at all about it. Not even the cover.
