In a recent acquisition of a friend's magic book collection, I have several books of Hugard's Magic Monthly in red cloth covers rather than the blue that I see in current reprints. The volumes are bound differently, too, as follows:
Volume V & VI
Volume VII
Volume VIII
Volume IX
Can anyone tell me about these red, perhaps earlier, editions?

Re: Hugard's Magic Monthly
The red cloth volumes are reprints done by the Fleming book co. during the 1940s or '50s. They never finished reprinting the entire magazine.

Thank you, Richard. Do you know how far they went? Was IX the final volume in their series?

Re: Hugard's Magic Monthly
Hi!
I understand it the red cloth cover is the original binding sold by Mr. Hugard to enable the buyer to bind his/her own volumes. Personally, I have most of the magazines bound in that cloth, except the first 3 volumes (I mean books... I'm away from my library now and I cannot check... they should be vols. I-VI) which are the Fleming reprints (with a slightly darker cover, a tiny bit taller and with different paper), and the last 6 issues, which are unbound.
If you are interested, I may check later on today.
Hope this helps, ciao!

Re: Hugard's Magic Monthly
Ok, I had a chance to check. I have 3 volumes reprinted by Fleming in 1949, each containing 2 volumes of the magazine (i.e. I-II, III-IV, V-VI). Then, there are other 7 volumes, containing 2 volumes each, in the original covers issued by the Carlos Lopez Press. These are vols. VII-XX (the latter published by Blanca Lopez after Mr. Hugard's death).
After this, there are only 6 issues of Vol. XXI (which I have, unbound), then the magazine died...
Hope this helps, ciao!
