The Hermit Magic Magazine

Postby Scottbbaird » January 5th, 2022, 1:23 pm

Hello,

I have started an independent magic magazine that pays homage to the many great magic magazines from the 1950s to 2000s. The Hermit Magic Magazine http://www.hermitmagic.com is a new digital monthly shipped in PDF form right to your email inbox, that focuses on creativity, engagement, and inspiration in magic. I am proud to boast contributions from the likes of Curtis Kam, Michal Kociolek, Harapan Ong, John Carey, Michael Rubinstein, Caroline Ravn, Rick Holcombe, Bill Citino, Chris Mayhew, Jay Sankey, Ryan Pilling, Gwyn Auger, Michael Pilkey, Greg Boggs, Rico Weeland, and myself.

Launched on January 1st, The Hermit is now offering single issues or subscriptions online. Inside each issue you will find:
- New magic routines, usually including a full presentation, and always with accompanying credits.
- Every effect is professionally illustrated for clarity (and because traditional magic illustrations are gorgeous).
- Articles and essays on topics of interest for magicians, including:
- Art and Design as they relate to magic
- Creative prompts and puzzles
- Methods for keeping organized
- Personal and professional development
- and more!
- Reviews of previously published magic books that highlight the gems that you may have missed- because we don't only learn from recent releases.
- Contests and calls for participation from the magic community, engaging the reader with fun and creative tasks.
- And much more!

Do get in touch with me if you have any questions!
Cheers,
Scott.

The first issue (JAN 2022) is available for purchase at http://www.hermitmagic.com

Vol. 1, No. 1 builds on the two methods taught previously in our free pilot issue (2 presentations for Rubik's Nap are offered, as well as a routine that uses the FUJ Shuffle, based on a David Solomon card plot). Our first issue also offers much more content, including:

- Swatch by Chris Mayhew- a new touch on the torn corner receipt switch.
- A literal change to the standard visual coins across routine by Scott Baird, that may trigger purists and cause you to question how you think about coins "flying".
- A dissertation of sorts on the "Do as I do" plot, and ideas about how to turn it around to make it unique and memorable.
- Gwyn Auger takes us through some basics of social media and marketing.
- Read the first "Sankey Says" column to be featured in The Hermit, on the power of being persistent.
- a new #hermitmagicchallenge is introduced.
- the IBM logo is re-designed as an exercise of a different creative process.
And more!

(for a breakdown of the full contents, check it out on http://www.conjuringarchive.com)

Keep an eye out for Vol. 1, No. 2, which is released on February 1st! A list of contents is available (and preorders can be purchased) at http://www.hermitmagic.com/issues. Single issues are CAD $10 (about $8 USD) and subscriptions are even cheaper!

Cheers,
Scott.

I'm proud and excited to announce that The Hermit Magazine's February issue is now available on http://www.lybrary.com or directly from http://www.hermitmagic.com

Haven't heard of The Hermit? It's a new, independent magic magazine that revives the black and white aesthetic of the magic periodicals of old, while taking advantage of modern technology to provide a clear and readable journal. Every trick is illustrated (as necessary) by Scott Baird in a traditional style. There are no ads or filler. Just a monthly PDF magazine featuring some amazing contributors sharing their creativity and magic! A full list of contributors is available at http://www.hermitmagic.com

Vol. 1 No. 1 (January 2022) was widely praised by our subscribers, and Chris Wasshuber from Lybrary.com wrote in his newsletter:

"Let me say that Scott is brave. Anybody who decides to do a monthly magic magazine is brave. And from the looks of the first issue, he is capable of pulling it off in style. The tricks are great. The contributors are top in their field. And the production values are outstanding. Wonderful illustrations. Very appealing layout and graphic design. If you love magic I really suggest you check out The Hermit. If you like tricks and not too much of the other stuff I suggest you check out The Hermit.

"The opportunity to help usher in a new perhaps future legendary magic journal does not come around that often. Imagine for a moment you could have been part of when the Jinx started, or the Pabular, Pentagram, Minotaur, etc. This is your opportunity. The Hermit deserves our support."

Vol. 1 No. 2 of The Hermit Magazine is a 45 page new issue that features:

EFFECTS

Collecting One by One / Harapan Ong - A progressive collectors routine based on the work of Alex Elmsley.
Cerebral CSB / Rick Holcombe - An easy-to-do bit of mental magic with coins from Rick Holcombe.
Undo Two / Scott Baird - A simultaneous, direct double sandwich routine using Simon Aronson's Undo Influence control.
Equicoins / John Carey - Another bit of mental magic with coins!

ARTICLES

Professor's Nightmare / Greg Boggs - Why this trick isn't outdated and is worth your time.
Let's Get Social / Gwyn Auger - How to style your Instagram page to encourage engagement.
Sankey Says - Feeling Success / Jay Sankey - Why you might not be feeling successful.

Plus a new, poetic challenge is set for February, as it's the month of romance. You'll need some simple codebreaking skill to find the hidden poem within the poem!

The Hermit is $10 CAD or $8.50 USD per issue. Subscriptions are available from our website!

Cheers,
Scott.

The Hermit is very pleased to announce two new contributors!

JOSHUA JAY will contribute to the April issue of The Hermit Magazine, teaching a previously unpublished effect, "Casual Cassandra". This was previously only available to about 40 attendees of the Costa Rica Retreat with Vanishing Inc.

Coin Maestro GIACOMO BERTINI will teach a new coin production in The Hermit's April issue as well! This will be the first of three new techniques initially slated to be taught in The Hermit, that will all come together in the summer as a full routine.

The APRIL issue of The Hermit is now available!

Vol. 1 No. 4 of The Hermit Magazine is an exciting new issue that features:

- Casual Cassandra, a previously unpublished piece from Joshua Jay that combines the story of a Greek myth and sleight of hand card magic. This routine follows the logic of Guy Hollingworth's plot, The Cassandra Quandary.

- The first element of Giacomo Bertini's new coin routine is explained- and the first part is a coin production that pops into view, instantly. The next three issues will feature new ideas from his original coin magic system, ending in a complete walkaround routine.

- Scott Baird describes Four Card Symphony, a method for divining the cut-to and remembered cards from four spectators in an increasingly magical way. Based completely on Simon Aronson's Four Part Harmony (from The Aronson Approach), this version does NOT require any memorized deck work.

- Also taught by Scott Baird is Scott and Soda. This is his pet routine; an international three coins across effect that uses a gimmick you probably already have, but under-use. The middle phase is near-perfect.

- Triple Prediction by John Carey is presented in this issue as a quick and simple prediction routine of three cards cut to freely by the spectator. The selections have been predicted far in advance!

- "Sankey Says" returns again as a regular feature delving into the mind of Jay Sankey.

- Misdirection in the sporting world is given a glance.

- an artistic new #hermitmagicchallenge is introduced.

You know it's a good issue when I can't wait another day to get it out there. So here it is, a day early! Visit http://www.hermitmagic.com or check it out on http://www.lybrary.com

The JUNE issue of The Hermit Magazine (Vol. 1, No. 6) is an 80pg. issue that features:

- Scott Baird explains his "On Waving Tides" routine, a "new" take on the classic effect from Apocalypse by Harry Lorayne and Ken Krenzel. A signed card from a blue deck of cards instantly and mysteriously travels to the center of a red deck of cards.

- Giacomo Bertini returns to The Hermit, with the finale to his three-coin routine explained in detail. The routine concludes with a three-coin vanish sequence, followed by a simultaneous reappearance in the spectator's own hands!

- Rick Holcombe teaches "Quantum Conundrum", a streamlined and efficient handling for Jack Carpenter's neo-classic routine, "Quantum Theory".

- Dr. Michael Rubinstein is a living legend in the world of coin magic. He generously shares his "Two Coin Turnover" and "Two Coin Turnover Variation," marking the first time these sleights have been shared in print.

- Ryan Pilling makes his Hermit Magazine debut with "The Turing Test", which is a clever presentation of "Bi-Kolor Kut" by Stewart and Guest, a stunt from the 1930s. Ryan has added a second phase to the routine that will fool you!

- Finally, John Carey presents his "Teleport: a card to envelope", combining the "card to envelope" plot with a "signed card across" methodology. I would like to challenge you all to send in how you would personalize this routine!

-"Sankey Says" returns again with Jay Sankey, this time discussing "Why you should forget about believing in yourself".

- We read the winning entries to last month's #hermitmagicchallenge, and a new one is set.

And, as an ADDITIONAL BONUS this month, you will receive a full issue of The Disclaimer, an independent magic magazine from Curtis Kam, Jeremiah Zuo, Tom Dobrowolski, and others! That's an extra 30 pgs. of great magic! Readers of The Disclaimer will also receive this copy of The Hermit in turn. You get two magazines for the price of one!

As always, I hope you enjoy this month's issue! Please send any thoughts, feedback, or reviews back to me at hermit@hermitmagic.com. I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks,
Scott Baird.

Thank you Bob for those kind words! I'm happy that people are enjoying it!

The July 2022 issue of The Hermit is now available!
Vol. 1 No. 7 of The Hermit Magazine is a new summer issue that features:

CAANADA by Scott Baird- this stands for "card at any number; alternate deck approach."
Changes in the Box by Luka Kratsashvili- 3 different visual colour changes of a card while it's sticking out of the card box.
Cryptic by Kyle Leon- a DaVinci code-inspired revelation of any named card. Includes templates to make your own!
Card Battle Royale by Fritz Alkemade- an unusual magician vs. gambler routine.
The Floating Bag (a.k.a. The Facebook Trick) by Patrik Kuffs- produce a brick from a bag that looks like it's floating on Facebook!
Another Nice Oil and Water by Rudy Tinoco- dare I say an improved handling of a classic Richard Vollmer oil and water routine.

And don't forget to read Sankey Says by Jay Sankey!

Re: The Hermit Magic Magazine

Postby Scottbbaird » August 1st, 2022, 7:34 am

As it's the first of the month, The Hermit's August issue is now available!
Vol. 1 No. 8 features:

Once again, The Hermit is proud to present Kyle Leon, who shares "A Cartoon Magic Effect" (ACME). This is a loony, original, highly visual effect, where the hole in a spectator’s signed card is mysteriously removed – like something straight out of a cartoon! And Kyle's routine isn't just good on camera- it's a real-world fooler!

Mentalist Boyet Vargas presents "All Four Two". That's right, The Hermit will be delving into the territory of mentalism! This is a mind reading effect where the mentalist identifies objects that the Spectator is thinking of. The routine uses no force, can be performed propless, and can use any objects that you choose! You can even perform it via video call. The effect is based on a newly-developed principle which can be used to create other new and existing effects.

Scott Baird teaches "Lean Travellers". This is my take on the Invisible Palm / Open Travellers plot. The routine is “lean” because you truly start with just four cards, and work from being one behind. The final vanish appears to happen away from the deck.

Scott also shares "A Tune Ahead". This is a method and presentation for a prediction effect, similar to Mental Epic or the classic Triple Prediction, using the one-ahead principle. However, these routines often require one bit of information to be forced in order to work. Not in this case! Scott took Michael Pilkey's SIRIously Mental reveal (described in Vol. 1 No. 3 of The Hermit) and ran with it, creating a three-prediction routine with a musical theme- and at the end, your phone's virtual assistant reveals the last prediction!

Patrik Kuffs describes an intriguing idea of his (similar to an effect published by Frank Chapman in 1936)- a presentation for a card to pocket routine, but without any standard palming techniques. He calls it "Poketus Subterfuge." Learn the move, as well as a clever routine that uses it, in The Hermit!

The Hermit is pleased to share John Carey's "When Two Minds Meet". Originally published in Me, My Cards, and I, this thought-of card routine is a fun deception that utilizes the concept of Michael Murray's Boomerang Force (from A Piece of My Mind) to great effect.

And Sankey Says will return with Jay Sankey! This month, Jay shares ten expert public speaking tips.

Re: The Hermit Magic Magazine

Postby Scottbbaird » September 1st, 2022, 11:32 pm

Hi everyone,

The September issue of The Hermit Magazine is out now!

Vol. 1 No. 9 of The Hermit Magazine is a new issue that features:

Gareth, who shares "Close-up Comfort in Harry's High Herb". This title will make more sense when you read the credits to the effect. It's a very fair and entertaining routine based on an old "spectators cut the aces" effect... Gareth's take on it changes this core premise, so that it becomes a "spectators..." ...well, don't let me spoil it for you!

Scott Baird teaches "Bigger Deal". This is my ongoing attempt at creating a full-deck "story" effect (think "Sam The Bellhop") that suits my performance style. It's a four-phase routine that is a display of skill, followed by the world's most unusual poker deal, resulting in a bridge hand and a perfect Blackjack; then one of the poker hands changes to a royal flush, and at the end of it all there's a game of "Go Fish".

Greg Boggs returns to the pages of The Hermit to state his case for the continued performance of "The Vanishing Bandana". Scott also shares his thoughts on this classic, examining its components and what makes it so great for kids shows. A myriad of ideas for plots, scripts, and presentations are offered for presenting this type of routine in a close-up, walk-around performing scenario.

Michael Boden wants to play a quick game of "Which Hand is IT?" Any small object is placed in your spectator's closed fist. It's normally a fifty-fifty guess, but Michael guesses correctly 100% of the time! No magnets, no electronics, no equivoque or wordplay, and no body language is used. His method is quite unique and ingenious, and I had to have it to publish in The Hermit

The Hermit is pleased to share Chiam Yu Sheng's "Triumph's Return". This take on the classic card routine ends with the cards all facing the same way, AND the deck is organized for a kicker that your lay audiences won't see coming. It's also a Triumph routine that uses two selections from two spectators!

Adam Socha's effect "Double Libido" is a quick but deceptive four-ace routine involving some personal information from your spectator. The spectator adds their parent's years of birth together, to come up with a unique four-digit number. Four packets of cards are dealt, to correspond with this number. When the spectator snaps their fingers, they will see that at the bottom of each packet there is an ace! However, when the magician snaps his fingers and the spectator turns over the top card of each packet, the number that the spectator has created appears!

As if that wasn't enough, Scott Baird shares "One Way, All The Way", a simple bit of business with a one-way forcing deck that is LITERALLY a one-way forcing deck.

And, as always, Sankey Says returns with Jay Sankey! This month, he gives great advice about taking your foot off the gas when you can.

Find The Hermit on Lybrary.com or by visiting www.hermitmagic.com

Cheers,
Scott.

It's the spooky season, officially!

The Hermit Magazine this month features:

Kyle Leon shares his "Close-Up Miracle Prediction." As you'd expect from Kyle, there's lots of clever thinking in this mental magic / card prediction effect!

Scott Baird teaches "Central Intelligence", and "Iterant Intelligence". The faro shuffle and the Searchers plot are put together to trap a selected card (or two!) in these progressive sandwich routines.

Patrik Kuffs returns to The Hermit, teaching "Drawing a Blank". If you've ever wanted to do a simple drawing duplication effect on a platform or stage, this routine might be the one for you!

Chiam Yu Sheng walks you through his spooky packet trick, "Zombie Apocalypse." You'll want to get a set of the specially printed cards from Alvo Stockman's "Zombie Monte", available from Penguin Magic, in order to do this routine.

Rico Weeland deals you in with his routine "Thank You, Eddie". Here's a card routine with beautiful construction and well thought-out sleight of hand, from someone who thinks deeply about his magic! Four aces disappear, and then reappear one at a time at any positions named or selected!

Plus, look for some bits of business by Chris Mayhew (his take on that old thumb gag, "Thumbnail"), and John Carey teaches "The One and Only", a packet card to pocket routine. Not least, Jay Sankey returns with his regular feature, "Sankey Says"- this time, discussing the secret psychology of criticizing people.

And, don't forget to participate in both the casting call (magicians wanted!) and the #hermitmagicchallenge for the month- which might be a bit puzzling!

As always, you can check out the Hermit from www.hermitmagic.com or by finding it on www.lybrary.com when it's uploaded.

Cheers all,

Scott.

The March issue of The Hermit Magazine is a TAKEOVER issue by Bigblindmedia, and features magic and articles from their roster of impressive magical minds, including:

EFFECTS

Cardnection / Cameron Francis
Both spectators select the same card. An excellent coincidence effect that uses a Simon Aronson move to great effect!

Blind Pebble Ace Fling / John Bannon
The legendary John Bannon contributes his take on Richard Sanders' Ace Thing, with a couple of clever moments of surprise.

KaDribble Change / Biz
A colour change done in the open, in the action of a dribble.

Magician's Nephew / Iain Moran
The spectator and the magician each cut to and pocket each other's selected cards.

The Repeater / Liam Montier
A Nick Trost routine given the Montier treatment. Produce three four-of-a-kinds with the help of your audience members!

Agogo Control / Tobias Hudson
A tabled card control, using a riffle selection procedure.

Tracking Jennifer / Jack Tighe
Jennifer Lawrence liked Chris Pratt's terrible magic trick. Let's see why, and make it better.

Simply Change / Biz
Another colour change from Biz. This one is super easy to do, but is completely surprising and visual.

ARTICLES
The A.C.A.A.N. Game / Biz
Why Do Some Sleights Survive? / Biz

Happy reading!
Scott.

The Hermit Magazine is back with a new issue!

EFFECTS

CKR / Boyet Vargas
A simple and easy to do mental effect where a thought-of object is divined. Can be performed over the phone or on Zoom, as well as in person! A variation by Scott is provided as well.

Ten-Star Prediction / Kyle Leon
Cleverness abounds once more as Kyle teaches a version of the Koran Miracle Prediction that allows you to display the prediction before the cards even come out of the box.

Kings & Aces / Scott Baird
This is my variation of Jerry Sadowitz's routine from Cards On The Table. Aces transpose despite being trapped between kings, and despite half of them being in the center of the deck the whole time!

Ambitious Aces / Mystic Slybaba
A smooth and deceptive sequence for your handling pleasure of Dr. Daley's Last Trick. Not just your standard double lifts. (*NOTE: It has just today been pointed out that this routine is nearly identical to a John Carney routine in Carneycopia. The creator has been notified, and a credit note will be put in the next issue of The Hermit.)

Open Ticket Express / James Mollenkamp
An open travellers routine performed with coins, after a Geoff Latta routine.

Techni-Lean Travellers / Scott Baird
A variation of my own Lean Travellers routine, with the added wrinkle that the four of a kind used have a different coloured back design than the rest of the deck.

Cut It Out Stack / Adam Hudson
A three-phase routine using a stacked deck from the mind of British radio mentalist and magician Adam Hudson.

52 to 1 / Brandon Sheffield
A sudden, surprising unequal transposition between a selected card and the deck in your hands.

Empathy Will Save Your Ass / Jay Sankey
Leave Your Dove Pan At Home / Caroline Ravn

Volume 2, No. 5 of The Hermit Magazine (May 2023) is now available! Visit www.hermitmagic.com to read this month's issue.

The latest issue of The Hermit Magazine is an embarrassment of riches with a loose spelling theme. A healthy mix of card, coin, and mental magic.

EFFECTS

Surprise Overture / Chiam Yu Sheng
Phil Goldstein's Overture is given a four-of-a-kind kicker ending.

Tap Triple Wild Coin / Scott Baird
David Roth's Stand-up Wild Coin is combined with some bits of business with a pen, and at the end, the coins all change into a third denomination!

Impromptu Speller / Kyle Leon
Kyle's handling of an impromptu spelling location. Kyle has added some nice touches to a simple spelling location, making the method harder to backtrack.

Spelling to the Aces / Corey Harris
As the title says! Spell to the aces after you shuffle the deck. End with a royal flush.

Handy Speller / Andy Choy
A wonderful mnemonic method for determining how many letters a card spells with.

ACAIN / Michael Pilkey
Any Card at its Name. A card is selected and returned, and then the magician hands the deck over to the spectator. Only then do they name their card out loud, and immediately they can spell right to it.

Sandwich to Stack / Chris Bruce
A quick sandwich routine that allows you to end in a stacked deck order.

Very First Impression / Patrik Kuffs
A cut and restored card effect, with a mental twist as the card appears to be cut before it's been thought of or named aloud.

Choice and Chance / John Carey
A spelling effect that ends with a four-of-a-kind production.

The Automatic Bottom Palm / Biz
In Biz's new monthly Sleight Corner, he teaches his automatic bottom palm, disguised in the actions of a swing cut.

Splell / Scott Baird
Get into Si Stebbins Stack from new deck order by performing an easily customizable spelling trick with a tongue-in-cheek presentation.

ARTICLES

Branding and Magic / Scott Baird
Inevitable Reinvention / Scott Baird

The Hermit is also available on www.lybrary.com, though it won't be posted on the site until the 10th of May while they're on vacation.

The June issue of The Hermit Magazine has a fantastic assortment of effects, creative thinking, and inspiration.

Ryan Schlutz (author of False Anchors and Unanchored), presents RNG, his updated take on Card at Any Sum.

A returning contributor to the magazine, Bill Citino shares his routine Making a Difference, a new variation of a Scott Robinson routine.

A Nightmare in Red and Blue is taught by Scott Baird, which is an improved handling of an old Don Nielson and Karl Fulves trick from Pallbearer's Review. I also teach my Flash Ribbon effect later in the issue.

June is also Tomás Giammarco's first appearance in The Hermit, and he shares his routine Strange Concordance 23332, of which I am a huge fan! It's based on Hofzinser's eighth card problem, Strange Harmony.

Brandon Sheffield returns to share a clever handling of a classic transposition with Lucky Coin and Purse.

Chris Bruce shares a fantastic gambling demo with five phases of skill,

Dan Waterman uses an old key card principle to execute a clean and simple Crimp Stab routine, and. uses it in a variation of a flourishy card location from Apocalypse,

and Jay Sankey returns to The Hermit with Sankey Says, where he discusses The Rewrite Phenomenon.

Also, James Mollenkamp shares four lessons that he learned after examining the structure of the classic Miser's Dream routine, and finally,

Biz teaches his Biz Cascade Control in the Sleight Corner!

As always you can find it available at http://www.hermitmagic.com or http://www.lybrary.com

Cheers,
Scott.
