The Hermit Magic Magazine

Postby Scottbbaird » January 5th, 2022, 1:23 pm

Hello,

I have started an independent magic magazine that pays homage to the many great magic magazines from the 1950s to 2000s. The Hermit Magic Magazine http://www.hermitmagic.com is a new digital monthly shipped in PDF form right to your email inbox, that focuses on creativity, engagement, and inspiration in magic. I am proud to boast contributions from the likes of Curtis Kam, Michal Kociolek, Harapan Ong, John Carey, Michael Rubinstein, Caroline Ravn, Rick Holcombe, Bill Citino, Chris Mayhew, Jay Sankey, Ryan Pilling, Gwyn Auger, Michael Pilkey, Greg Boggs, Rico Weeland, and myself.

Launched on January 1st, The Hermit is now offering single issues or subscriptions online. Inside each issue you will find:
- New magic routines, usually including a full presentation, and always with accompanying credits.
- Every effect is professionally illustrated for clarity (and because traditional magic illustrations are gorgeous).
- Articles and essays on topics of interest for magicians, including:
- Art and Design as they relate to magic
- Creative prompts and puzzles
- Methods for keeping organized
- Personal and professional development
- and more!
- Reviews of previously published magic books that highlight the gems that you may have missed- because we don't only learn from recent releases.
- Contests and calls for participation from the magic community, engaging the reader with fun and creative tasks.
- And much more!

Do get in touch with me if you have any questions!
Cheers,
Scott.

The first issue (JAN 2022) is available for purchase at http://www.hermitmagic.com

Vol. 1, No. 1 builds on the two methods taught previously in our free pilot issue (2 presentations for Rubik's Nap are offered, as well as a routine that uses the FUJ Shuffle, based on a David Solomon card plot). Our first issue also offers much more content, including:

- Swatch by Chris Mayhew- a new touch on the torn corner receipt switch.
- A literal change to the standard visual coins across routine by Scott Baird, that may trigger purists and cause you to question how you think about coins "flying".
- A dissertation of sorts on the "Do as I do" plot, and ideas about how to turn it around to make it unique and memorable.
- Gwyn Auger takes us through some basics of social media and marketing.
- Read the first "Sankey Says" column to be featured in The Hermit, on the power of being persistent.
- a new #hermitmagicchallenge is introduced.
- the IBM logo is re-designed as an exercise of a different creative process.
And more!

(for a breakdown of the full contents, check it out on http://www.conjuringarchive.com)

Keep an eye out for Vol. 1, No. 2, which is released on February 1st! A list of contents is available (and preorders can be purchased) at http://www.hermitmagic.com/issues. Single issues are CAD $10 (about $8 USD) and subscriptions are even cheaper!

Cheers,
Scott.

I'm proud and excited to announce that The Hermit Magazine's February issue is now available on http://www.lybrary.com or directly from http://www.hermitmagic.com

Haven't heard of The Hermit? It's a new, independent magic magazine that revives the black and white aesthetic of the magic periodicals of old, while taking advantage of modern technology to provide a clear and readable journal. Every trick is illustrated (as necessary) by Scott Baird in a traditional style. There are no ads or filler. Just a monthly PDF magazine featuring some amazing contributors sharing their creativity and magic! A full list of contributors is available at http://www.hermitmagic.com

Vol. 1 No. 1 (January 2022) was widely praised by our subscribers, and Chris Wasshuber from Lybrary.com wrote in his newsletter:

"Let me say that Scott is brave. Anybody who decides to do a monthly magic magazine is brave. And from the looks of the first issue, he is capable of pulling it off in style. The tricks are great. The contributors are top in their field. And the production values are outstanding. Wonderful illustrations. Very appealing layout and graphic design. If you love magic I really suggest you check out The Hermit. If you like tricks and not too much of the other stuff I suggest you check out The Hermit.

"The opportunity to help usher in a new perhaps future legendary magic journal does not come around that often. Imagine for a moment you could have been part of when the Jinx started, or the Pabular, Pentagram, Minotaur, etc. This is your opportunity. The Hermit deserves our support."

Vol. 1 No. 2 of The Hermit Magazine is a 45 page new issue that features:

EFFECTS

Collecting One by One / Harapan Ong - A progressive collectors routine based on the work of Alex Elmsley.
Cerebral CSB / Rick Holcombe - An easy-to-do bit of mental magic with coins from Rick Holcombe.
Undo Two / Scott Baird - A simultaneous, direct double sandwich routine using Simon Aronson's Undo Influence control.
Equicoins / John Carey - Another bit of mental magic with coins!

ARTICLES

Professor's Nightmare / Greg Boggs - Why this trick isn't outdated and is worth your time.
Let's Get Social / Gwyn Auger - How to style your Instagram page to encourage engagement.
Sankey Says - Feeling Success / Jay Sankey - Why you might not be feeling successful.

Plus a new, poetic challenge is set for February, as it's the month of romance. You'll need some simple codebreaking skill to find the hidden poem within the poem!

The Hermit is $10 CAD or $8.50 USD per issue. Subscriptions are available from our website!

Cheers,
Scott.

The Hermit is very pleased to announce two new contributors!

JOSHUA JAY will contribute to the April issue of The Hermit Magazine, teaching a previously unpublished effect, "Casual Cassandra". This was previously only available to about 40 attendees of the Costa Rica Retreat with Vanishing Inc.

Coin Maestro GIACOMO BERTINI will teach a new coin production in The Hermit's April issue as well! This will be the first of three new techniques initially slated to be taught in The Hermit, that will all come together in the summer as a full routine.

Scott, I can assure you that putting words in all capitol letters will not gain you greater sales.

My apologies- I copied and pasted from my online newsletter. I am certain that you are correct about the lack of correlation between uppercase and sales.

The APRIL issue of The Hermit is now available!

Vol. 1 No. 4 of The Hermit Magazine is an exciting new issue that features:

- Casual Cassandra, a previously unpublished piece from Joshua Jay that combines the story of a Greek myth and sleight of hand card magic. This routine follows the logic of Guy Hollingworth's plot, The Cassandra Quandary.

- The first element of Giacomo Bertini's new coin routine is explained- and the first part is a coin production that pops into view, instantly. The next three issues will feature new ideas from his original coin magic system, ending in a complete walkaround routine.

- Scott Baird describes Four Card Symphony, a method for divining the cut-to and remembered cards from four spectators in an increasingly magical way. Based completely on Simon Aronson's Four Part Harmony (from The Aronson Approach), this version does NOT require any memorized deck work.

- Also taught by Scott Baird is Scott and Soda. This is his pet routine; an international three coins across effect that uses a gimmick you probably already have, but under-use. The middle phase is near-perfect.

- Triple Prediction by John Carey is presented in this issue as a quick and simple prediction routine of three cards cut to freely by the spectator. The selections have been predicted far in advance!

- "Sankey Says" returns again as a regular feature delving into the mind of Jay Sankey.

- Misdirection in the sporting world is given a glance.

- an artistic new #hermitmagicchallenge is introduced.
