Hi.
I know there are several "Modern Magic" editions.
Magicpedia
http://www.geniimagazine.com/wiki/index ... dern_Magic
says first US edition was by Rutledge in 1882.
I have seen on internet some pictures of McKay "american" edition and these books have not the publishing date printed. I have seen diferent McKay covers: bright blue, fade green (maybe the same color washed-out ) , white and beige. All of them whith 3 circles: one with a top hat, one with a cup with ball, one with hands and handkerchief.
Anybody knows in what years were these McKay books published? Different cover colors means different editions? I have seen some delares saying around 1880 but I think is not an accurate date, since 1882 was the first american edition by Rutledge.
Magicpedia has a link to google books stating Mckay 1904. So was that the first year by McKay?
Thanks

Re: Modern Magic (Hoffman) editions
I'm not a serious collector, but you can get an idea from bookseller websites:
https://www.worthpoint.com/inventory/search?query=hoffmann+modern+magic&categories=
https://biblio.co.uk/book/modern-magic-practical-treatise-art-conjuring/d/1276583555
https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&cm_sp=SearchF-_-home-_-Results&an=hoffmann&tn=modern+magic&kn=mckay&isbn=
Unfortunately not all booksellers give accurate information or know what the various editions are. It does seem to be difficult in the case of Hoffmann's books because many of the editions are not dated.
There must be a few proper collectors on the forum who can help.
Good luck!

Thank you Mr Corrie. Yes, not all booksellers have accurate information, At abebooks, worthpoint, ebay and sites of the kind I have seen very different dates, I think usaully they give the original edition date, but not necessarily the item they offer is that edition.

Thank you very much Mr Henderson, that sounds as an excelent resource. "Professor Hoffman: a study" wow, very scarce. "Victorian-Age Conjuring Books" could help and is available at Lybrary

Thank you very much Mr Blackmore. That is a good clue

This might have the answers - if you can find a copy.
Re: Modern Magic (Hoffman) editions
I would contact Bryon Walker in San Leandro.. He is a book dealer with a lot of books and a lot of knowledge about magic and its history. He does have a website but not sure of the url.
