Locked Room Mysteries

The recent release of the debut novel by Tom Mead, Death and the Conjuror, is the inspiration for this survey of "10 Most Puzzling Impossible Crime Mysteries".

I was heartened by the fact that Carr and Hoch occupied the top three spots on this list but I missed Rawson and Pronzini.

Oh well, we each have our own lists.

Sounds like some great food for my reading list. Thank you for pointing it out, Bill!

Missing from this list but usually included in other locked room lists, is the book by Henning Nelms (Magic and Showmanship) writing as Hake Talbot:

Also, an invaluable reference:

Tom recently gave a lecture on two lesser known locked room mysteries at the Bodies from the Library conference (British Library June 24).
The Death of Lawrence Vining by Alan Thomas (1929) & Into Thin Air by Winslow & Quirk (1928).
Both books are long out of print.
Vining involves a character murdered while descending a tube station lift.
Into Thin Air involves an apparent supernatural seance.
These books are not available – except at the British Library itself where you can examine the texts and make digital copies for free and download them to your flash drive or email link.

I have double-checked and both books are there.

The Death of Laurence Vining.
Alan Thomas, 1896-1969.

Into Thin Air.
Horatio WINSLOW, and QUIRK (Leslie W.)
Garden City, N.Y. : Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1929

I have also sent off for CADS Supplement 13: John Dickson Carr's the Three Coffins: A Hollow Victory? by J. Morris
An analysis of the flaws to be found in this much admired locked room murder.
Sounds promising! Maybe it can be reprinted in Genii?

French author Paul Halter (b.1956) is worth examining as he specialises in Locked Room/Impossibilist fiction.
Many of his books and short stories have been translated into English.

I've decided to sell my massive locked room collection as a unit. Message me if interested.
