The Last Magic Trick of Orson Welles

Postby Bill Mullins » October 19th, 2020, 5:05 pm

On October 9, 1985, Orson Welles was on Merv Griffin's show. He opened with a magic trick. After the show, he went home, and when his driver came to pick him up the next day, he didn't answer the door. He had died during the night.

An idiot security guard refused to let Welles park right at the back door to the studio the way he always did. The far walk from where he was forced to park might be what killed him that night.

My first but by no means last encounter with Orson Welles was on the I Love Lucy show where he did the Broom Suspension with Lucy. I grew up watching all those episodes on television. And of all those morning and afternoon reruns, the one that had a lasting imprint on my young mind was the Orson special guest appearance where he did magic.
