In this video essay, Nerdwriter takes a look at The Prestige's structure and how it plays into the plot.

In particular,how Nolan has twisted it around to serve the interests of the narrative, each feeding into one another.
The film is playing it’s own tricks, through editing. It’s all a trick, which is really what film editing is: tricks for the audience.

"tricks for the audience" - bravo.

The book has its own meta about writing.

The Illusionist and The Prestige had significantly different audience responses to the plot revelations/unwind.
