Bob Read DVD Collection
Bob Read DVD Collection
Being a big fan of Bob Read, the recently released DVD Collection from International Magic is going to be a definite purchase for me.
I wondered, however, if the recent L&L release is worthwhile considering as a second purchase or does it merely contain a subset of the material/footage covered on the 'Collection'.
I would welcome any comments.
Cheers
Andrew

I believe the new L&L release is essentialy a DVD print of the old Videonics video tapes from the 80's.
The International set is different - and contains a much more complete catlogue of Bob's work. Aside from the video material, the Internaionals discs also contain PDFs of all of the booklets released by Bob - it a fantastic set that is well worth the price.

Re: Bob Read DVD Collection
The collection from International Magic contains 4 DVDs, with performances from Bob's career from 1976 to 2005. Over eight hours of video, lots of instruction (very detailed), and pdfs of all his printed books.
The single DVD from L&L contains some of the same material, but it was a one-shot deal by Hans Zahn (whose products I heard were often shot in a gymnasium and are pretty shoddy productions), however the versions on the International Magic DVD set supercede it in every way because of the more mature developement of the routines, patter, and the more detailed explanatations.

This will be my next purchase. It looks terrific - I am really interested in the Magic walk around London - to me that will be worth the price of the disks. I bet there are a few on this forum who were lucky enough to do the tour for real.

Spending any private time with Bob was a treat: one of the great things about this four disc set is that you have the opportunity to see what that was like. The London Walk is wonderful--Bob at his very best.

This DVD set is a must have. I was very pleased to have finally met Bob at the Centenary that summer. He and I had engaged in a protracted e-mail conversation about various and sundry things. I saw 1/6 of his manuscript for the book that is coming out.
I was also on that London walk. It was one of my best birthdays ever!

Having Bob take my wife and I on a pub crawl was the highlight of that trip... meanwhile, I just got the DVD set and will be "tooning in",
Stay tooned.

Re: Bob Read DVD Collection
I have been trying to print out Bob's "notes", but the accompanying pictures do not print out correctly. Is any one else having this experience? Any secrets to printing the pictures out in a usable fashion? Thanks in advance.

Dan, if you read my liner notes you'll see that the photos are not designed to be printed out. You're supposed to print out the text so you can read it while viewing the photos on your computer monitor.

Re: Bob Read DVD Collection
Thanks Richard, I haven't gotten that far yet (reading your liner notes). Viewing a hard copy of the text and sitting in front of a computer, and having an area on which to work, is a pretty inconvenient way of studying magic, for me at least. And, that was one of the reasons I purchased this set - to finally have a copy of Mr. Read's notes. Oh well - I am enjoying the rest so far.

Read my liner notes and you'll see why things are set up that way.

Re: Bob Read DVD Collection
I have been enjoying the International Magic Bob Read set, it's wonderful!
Does anyone know if the L & L DVD "The Impromptu Miracles Of Bob Read-
"The Lost Fotage" has different material?
I have heard unofficially that there is some overlap, but what isn't clear
is if the L & L disc contains material NOT on the International Magic set.
Anybody know?

Re: Bob Read DVD Collection
If you have the International Magic set you don't need anything else, really. You already have the same material recorded in better circumstances.

Re: Bob Read DVD Collection
My review of this disc should appear in the May issue of Genii, so I will not go into detail here. But I will say that only two items appear on the L&L disc that are not on the International Magic set, and they are performance only: The Linking Rings and Professor's Nightmare.
