Especially if still attached to a stripper. He could produce a jumbo coin as a kicker.

"performing "The Portable Hole" with a merkin instead of a piece of felt"

not an entirely ridiculous idea

In the proper performing circumstances it could probably be quite funny.

For that routine to make any sense at all, you'd have to use dollars bills instead of coins.

An actual merkin would generate a lot of curious interest, and the routine could be funny in the right setting. While I doubt that we'll see anyone whip out a merkin at Bill Joslin's table any time soon, some of the dark, late-night performances in the Jack Okie could be conducive to it. And apparently magic is performed outside the Castle, as well.

No wonder I keep getting thrown out of those places.

Mike Close - it's not a name; it's a recording technique.

Some day in the future, when the history is written:

The current craze for all things merkin in magic began, almost as a lark, with a suggestion from Richard Kaufman on an Internet forum. . . That Kaufman is widely hailed now as the "Father of Merkin" magic has obscured his other contributions to the field, as a publisher and author.
