Would the effect not be more impressive if a marked deck was used and the cards are dealt face down as you "weigh the cards."

That's a great point, M. Billot. I should have clarified that the method in the second edition is noteworthy for allowing the performer to ascertain the value of a single card that has been removed from a fifty-two-card deck.
In a much earlier post, Shrink enthusiastically referred to Lewis Jones' exploration of clocking in Counter Feats; in case anyone missed it, Mr Jones offered a different but highly practical approach in his Imp Romp 2, which also appeared in the recently republished Seventh Heaven.

Weber has some interesting work on “clocking” a deck from behind while a spectator is handed the deck to remove the selected card and it’s mates (Real Secrets, Pacioli).
