Earliest references of the magic square go back to ancient China. It's construction is also associated with numerology, the even and odd numbers representing the yin and yang symbols, respectfully balancing earth and heaven. "FeTiSH, MiLK, RoBiN" (Fast and Loose, Racherbaumer and Anderson).
