I was wondering if anyone knew how to perform the picture duplication trick without having to buy any props!

does anyone know how Derren Brown manages to perform this?

I don't think anyone's going to tell you that. :)

Richard's right. You're basically asking how a trick is done on an open forum, which is a no-no. And quite frankly, as a working mentalist, I have several ways of performing the same "effect" -- pic dupes included -- so asking for a method is a little basic.

It is clear that you are not familiar with the standard literature out there. My advice is to take a look at it, and then begin to amass ways of doing effects that "appear" to not use any props.

It's out there, but not in a "put-the-coin-here-and-then-do-this-and-it vanishes." Mentalism is a different animal and requires a different approach. (And quite frankly, if your coin act was simply putting coins places and then they vanish, it would be a little dull. So would a mental act that just duplicated pictures. What's the context? What's the frame?)

After you've become familiar with the literature, think hard, session with friends, etc. to work out WHAT you want to accomplish, and then find a way to make that happen.

That's a very unsatisfying answer, I know. It would be great to say buy this trick or book and you too can be Derren Brown. But if you do your homework and work at it, you'll have your a-ha moment.

It has nothing to do with this being an open forum, but has everything to do with the fact that it's your first post and you're asking how Derren Brown does one of his tricks. That's not how things work around here.

Do a little research on the internet and buy some books or DVDs.

ok maybe should have said does anyone have any good resources to learn this then?

any good starting points? I watched banacheks version of it which is pretty good, but would you guys say using props makes the trick get a better reaction?

thank you.

props/no props. Makes little diffence. A peek or a 1500 device. Makes little difference.

Ask the speccy to describe what happened in the effect afterwards and if you have done your job they will say "I thought of an object and he read my mind".

It is the presentation that matters, not the method.

I will tell you how but you will have to read a few books first.

In my book ignorance is ignorance and bliss is knowable and bliss is being able to create art from knowledge.
(Sorry guys it aint art without knowledge).

So we have to have a mutual skill set to work from.

Now the big question is are ya ready to work?

Actually reading books is a shortcut to knowledge. Otherwise one woul have to reinvent the wheel.

How many times has the wheel been reinvented? Too many. It round , has no corners, discover the damn wheel already!

carry on!

But Brian, the only way to wear down what one imagines as workable into what rolls for someone in particular as a performer is to get out there and perform. Just because they don't know how a trick works does not mean they like the person who did it.

Carry on indeed. How about five ways to sell one trick you know you can do rather than looking for five new tricks you can hope to fool them with? :)

On an encouraging note, once you have done all the research (and if you choose to use props), you can make perfectly adequate props yourself. Don't let the expense of stuff put you off. It's about performance, not investment.
