The Eclectic Rainbow Deck 2011 Edition

Postby David Prouty » September 10th, 2011, 11:34 pm

The first time I ever heard of a Rainbow Deck was in 1992 when a friend of mine killed me with John Bannon's Strangers Gallery. I immediately devoured Bannon's book Smoke and Mirrors, and was fascinated with a discussion concerning use of "The Senator" Clarke Crandall's Rainbow Deck as finale for Color Changing Deck routines... That's when I started hunting for poker decks that fit the criteria: poker sized, white borders, standard red and black pips, and no duplicates. From the decks collected over the past 19 years, I set out to construct the most aesthetically pleasing Rainbow Deck possible...

In June 2010, I made available to Genii Forum members a unique deck constructed from the best decks of my collection, the Eclectic Rainbow Deck. The deck was a great success, and sold out in less than a month.

During this past year I have re-organized my collection and acquired many new back designs. From this most recent effort I have constructed a limited number of Eclectic Rainbow Decks, and will offer them again to Genii Forum Members exclusively through the end of the month (September, 2011).

Each deck comes with a Red or Blue Joker cover card (Bicycle Rider Back), and matching Bicycle card case.

I think you mean Paul Gordon's.

What great timing! I was just last evening searching for the RD I bought from you last year, and it's nowhere to be found. I'm sure the money I just sent you will ensure that I find it later today, along with some car keys, lottery tix, dry cleaning stubs, etc.

Derek Dingle had a great routine with the Rainbow deck published in one of the Symposium books.

Mr. Prouty:

Are all of the faces from decks whose faces match exactly? (since there is considerable variation in color, number of indices, design of the court cards, etc between USPC and other companies)

Thanks!

How much overlap is there between this deck and the one you did last year?

Thank You all for the enthusiastic response...

These pictures might show the cards better:
Image Image

In response to some questions... I tried to be very careful to keep the cards as uniform as possible concerning the white faces. I also tried to carefully select court cards to avoid major discrepancies... the pictures are pretty much representative of all the decks, although certainly, no two decks are alike.

There are approximately 12 new back designs in the 2011 edition, compared with the decks I produced last summer...

Mr. Goat: I am unaware of Paul Gordon's connection to Strangers Gallery... Maybe I'm missing some important referencing??

Thanks for your interest...

David, don't worry..... the Gordon reference is all about a laughable past absurdi-deed, not anything you did.

I want to thank all Genii Forum members who have placed orders, your decks have been shipped...

I mentioned that Bannon's Stranger's Gallery first prompted me to construct a Rainbow Deck, and several members have asked about what routines I've used...

I think using a RD for color changing deck finale is pretty spectacular... so I have been directing my attention to tracking down those type of routines. I've been playing with Marlo's (Vernon's) Color Changing Deck (Bill Malone's take, "Here I Go Again" Vol.2), which also allows me to make good use of my Stranger's Gallery gaffs...

Richard mentioned Dingle's routine (New York Magic Symposium Vol3),

Rainbow Prediction-Tony Griffith, Semi-Automatic Card Tricks-Vol.5

Frank Garcia/Senator Crandall - Super Subtle Card Miracles

The Rainbow Deck Book - Randy Wakeman

Part of the fun is in the hunt ...

Being inspired by Henry Evans, I had my friend Gary Plants make an Acrobatic cover card (Red Bicycle/Green TallyHo), and with a gentle lateral toss of the deck on a close up pad, the red deck instantly transforms as it splays across the surface... Spectacular!

Each deck comes with a Red or Blue Joker cover card (Bicycle Rider Back), and matching Bicycle card case.

Hello Again,

The Eclectic Rainbow Deck remains exclusively available to Genii Forum members through September 30th (5 days left!), and they have been vanishing quickly...

I think of the Rainbow Deck as an "Improbable Object", something most laymen have never seen, or even heard of. In my opinion, it is the most astounding way to end a color changing deck routine, not to mention the incredible effects developed by "Senator" Clarke Crandall, Frank Garcia, Derek Dingle, John Bannon, Randy Wakeman, Tony Griffth, to name a few...

It also serves as a totally unique bank of cards that can be utilized individually in many other routines.

Each deck comes with a Red or Blue Joker cover card (Bicycle Rider Back), and matching Bicycle card case.

I just received my ERD 2011 Decks, and they are superb.

Not sure if there are any decks remaining, but they have been well-assembled with a nice variety of backs (especially the non-white bordered backs such as the J&B, Cheetos, Budweiser, Pepsi,'Smiley face', etc.) Highly recommended.

Thank You again to everybody who's supported the Eclectic Rainbow Deck project...

I still have some very fine decks available, but do not expect them to be around for long as I will be making them available outside of the Genii Forum. If you are interested, drop me an email.

I would appreciate comments, ideas or feedback concerning any aspect of the Rainbow Deck... history, anadotes, routines, etc...

Again, Thank You!

Got my deck from David the other day. He has gone to a ton of work and research to create these decks. They are very nice and very fun to have. It's especially fun going through the backs one by one and putting a timeline on some of these.

Great work David! Thanks for making these available!
