Why were they recalled - licensing issues?

If it was indeed recalled, it's because Dover used (without permission) scans from the Taschen book MAGIC and Taschen protested.

Dover's own site does indeed show it as unavailable (out of stock):
http://store.doverpublications.com/0486991032.html
One of the posters in the book was signed by Jane Thurston to Mike Caveney, so it was pretty clear where it came from!

Dover UK shows it in stock but you have to fill a load of forms out to see if it's in your cart, including bank and personal details etc. They probably just want personal info.
I have the Taschen book and am glad Taschen protested. The book is a work of art and to rip it off is an insult to the publishers, artists and creators of a wonderful publication.

In case anyone else is looking for this: Midwest Magic currently has this book in stock for list price. Good luck!
Re: WTB Dover 60 Years of Magic Posters
They had a copy at the magic shop in Ft. Worth for the longest time. Seeing this thread reminded me that I wanted to pick it up before I lost my chance. Thankfully they still had it.

Re: WTB Dover 60 Years of Magic Posters
The thread subject has the title wrong, causing confusion. This is 60 Great Magic Posters, the Dover book which came out recently (this past spring?) but was recalled due to lifting images from the Taschen book.
Here's one on eBay for $19.99 with Buy It Now:

How can Taschen force the recall? Weren't the images already public domain when Taschen published them?

The poster themselves may be in the public domain, but Taschen owns the photographs that they paid to be taken of them.

I wouldn't bet on that as far as U.S. law goes.
Precedent was set in the following high profile case: (explained here)
Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp., 36 F. Supp. 2d 191 (S.D.N.Y. 1999), was a decision by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, which ruled that exact photographic copies of public domain images could not be protected by copyright in the United States because the copies lack originality. Even if accurate reproductions require a great deal of skill, experience and effort, the key element for copyrightability under U.S. law is that copyrighted material must show sufficient originality.
I do not know if Taschen's photos went beyond mere duplication enough to create a derivative copyrightable work.

If they photoshopped them in any way, I would imagine they are covered because photoshopping requires expertise and one could even make the case that the result is an artful expression.

What about that one poster that had a unique signature on it?

It would probably depend on the amount and type of correction done.
If it was done merely to make the reproductions represent the real thing even more closely, that might actually make them less copyrightable if I'm reading the decision correctly.
Otherwise one could achieve infinite copyright merely by continually re-photographing and making minor edits.
