I have two copies of this book and can't part with one. This is the best bio of Houdini I have ever read. Professor Silverman's writing style is scholarly, yet never fails to engage the reader. He stays with the facts, speculates and analyzes, but he never inserts dialogue and thought balloons as if it was a movie script.
His section on the origins of Houdini's act is absolutely fascinating. Silverman views it as a combination of the burglar and the Sandow muscle shows of the early 20th century.
