Looking for "Transmission of Information" by Morgan and West

Postby jimb_85 » March 14th, 2020, 5:13 pm

The duo published a small booklet outlining how they did some of their tricks (including the silhouette card routine from "Fool Us") some years ago that is now out of print. I was curious to see if anyone had a copy.

I don't need the actual booklet if anyone wants to hold onto that. I'd be fine with scans or a PDF file.

I did ask the duo. They don't have any copies left.

Sorry if it sounded like I was asking for piracy. I should have been clearer. I was just trying to offer an alternative in case anyone who has the booklet doesn't want to part with the actual copy.

Yeah. I don't want to get in trouble for a misunderstanding.

... you wouldn't happen to have a copy, would you?

If they didn't want to give or sell you a PDF, then it's pretty clear that they don't want you to have one, and if you get one from another source without their blessing it still is piracy.

I'm just curious as to how you could believe it wouldn't be piracy.

The notes are no longer sold. The only way I would be able to obtain a copy is from someone who already owns it. It's buying second-hand.

If I buy a physical (conjuring) item, such as a deck of cards or a book, and I later sell it to you, that's fine.

But if it's an item that could be copied electronically, and I copy it electronically and sell it to you and retain a copy for myself, then that's piracy/theft. If the creator made 100 of them, at £20 each, I've now created a 101st one. And the creator hasn't been paid £20 for the 101st one.

Whether I sell the original to you and keep the copy, or sell the copy to you and keep the original, wouldn't make much difference. Either way, I've copied something and I had no right to do so.

Apologies, that sounds like a lecture. It isn't intended to be. Merely trying to explain why it isn't "buying second-hand", it's creating an extra copy. Just my perspective - others may view it differently.

Okay, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked for a PDF. I was just trying to offer an alternative for someone who didn't want to part with the original. I didn't realize it would cause such a problem.

Okay, I understand now. Again, my apologies. Wasn't trying to cause trouble.

I think that the ethics of trading conjuring secrets is a very grey area. (Probably fifty shades of it, like my hair. :D)

Some things are definitely ok, others are definitely not ok, and others (including the instance in this thread) can arouse a variety of opinions.

So it's not surprising that it generates strong reactions.

I'm wondering how many other people are looking at their copies and wondering whether to put them up for sale at three figures, or four :)

Well, this thread became moot as I managed to find someone who was willing to sell a copy. Anyone know how I can lock or delete the thread?

But I see no greyness at all in selling a legitimate copy of lecture notes to another person.
