ID of painting?

It's probably well known to readers of this forum, but I had never seen this image before. It's currently in the LA County Museum of Art. Can someone identify it and give some history about it?

Looks like it's made of borrowed images from old books and catalogues. Also reminds me of those small lenticular images on a flicker ring when I was a kid.
