Sorcar not in MAGIC 1400's - 1950's ?

Postby P.T.Widdle » June 15th, 2015, 3:29 pm

The other night I had a guest in my home originally from Pune, India. He remembered the name Sorcar from his childhood - "Oh yes, PC Sorcar! My dad told me about him."

I recalled seeing a Sorcar poster in one of my books, so thinking it was in MAGIC, the giant Taschen book I keep on display, I checked the index but surprisingly found no mention of Sorcar. Can this be so? It seems like that would be a huge omission in an otherwise wonderful (and exhaustive) book.

It was a bit of an awkward social moment (at least for me), not being able to find Sorcar, arguably India's most famous modern magician, in a giant book called, MAGIC: 1400's - 1950s for an Indian guest in my home.

PS - I did end up remembering where I saw the poster: as a sample page online from Cavney's Classic Correspondence 1 detailing Sorcar's letter to Dante.

Not directly connected to either of the above, but as a matter of interest, back in the long ago yesterday, news and updates of Sorcar were a regular feature of Abra. I think it was Sorcar himself who used to send out reams of publicity.
Don't recall whether it was Junior or Senior. Always interesting though.

Sorcar is all over Hugard's and Sphinx in the late '40s - early '50s. The volume of his publicity mailings is frequently commented upon.

ALERT - The following paragraph contains a Conspiracy Theory which I don't actually believe, but then again the omission is rather surprising:

Sorcar and Helmut "Kalanag" Schreiber were bitter rivals. Taschen is based in Germany.

The book is entitled: "Magic: 1400's - 1950's"

..but even so, Sorcar would certainly qualify.

I was wondering whey Leonard Hevia changed the subject too (trying to put it back).

Sorcar is certainly an important enough figure in magic's history to qualify for an appearance in that book. Only those involved in the book's production can answer the question.

Is it possible that, with all of the photographs, posters, etc. included, that his appearance is there but has been missed? Was it an oversight? With such a huge task, forgetting someone was not difficult to do.
