Derek Dingle, Best of Friends.

Postby Roy McIlwee » December 5th, 2003, 8:23 pm

Having read both Volumes of Harry Loraynes Best of Friends Vol 1 and 2., I wonder why Derek Dingle would not be included? Was he not the best close up artist in New York at that time?? Very curioius to know why. Roy McIlwee.

My guess would be that, at the time of their publication, Mr. Dingle and Mr. Lorayne were not "The Best Of Friends".

Without knowing the facts I would consider it entierly possible that Derek Dingle did want to reserve his material for his own books and video tapes.......

Best of Friends Vol. 1 is copyrighted in 1982. The Complete Works of Derek Dingle (by the Chief Genii himself) is also copyrighted in 1982. The simple answer is that Dingle was saving his material for his own book.

I'll refer you gentlemen to page 54 of the collected almanac (Kaufman, 1992).

Read "An Open Letter To Harry Lorayne" written by Derek Dingle and dated Feb. 5th 1983.

The letter states that Dingle had considered Lorayne as the writer of his book but decided against it because of what Lorayne did on the Krenzel book. It doesn't necessarily indicate a falling out had occurred (the letter does hint of one after the fact, due to Lorayne's remarks about Dingle's book.) Krenzel's book came out in 1978, so Dingle was already planning the book at that point. Coincidentally, that was the first year of Apocalypse magazine in which Dingle contributed two items (also the only year in which Richard Kaufman was on board). At that point his contributions stopped. I get the impression from the write ups that those contributions were made through Richard, so perhaps a rift had already begun to develop between him and Lorayne. However, I'll stick with the fact that Dingle was planning his own book so why would he contribute material to Lorayne's even if they were on good terms.

If I may ask, what happened with the Krenzel book?

Here is how the cover of the first printing of Ken's book looks:

HARRY LORAYNE

The Card Classics of Ken Krenzel

Also, Harry threatened both Derek and I if we used any of the tricks from Dingle's Deceptions in The Complete Works of Derek Dingle. So, Derek changed the handlings of those half-dozen tricks so it became a non-issue.
I would say that they were not on good terms at that point.

Richard,

You own the copyright on Collected Almanac, right? Can you post the letter?

Dear Santa,
I've been a good boy this year.
For Christmas, please get me The Collected Almanac. I hear it's filled with great magic.
Thank you.

Kind of off topic but if you dont' have collected almanac you're really missing out on some of the best close up magic ever to see print.

Starting the first issue and Dingle's Alpha Toss (which nobody seems to do) and including Gallo's Ball and Vase routine, Bro. John Hamman's "The Magic Cards" and "The Twins".

Draun's shift
The Gallo pitch
