How to date references to Tarbell

Postby Andru Luvisi » September 23rd, 2022, 10:01 am

Hi all,

Does anyone know how much the Tarbell course was changed by D. Robbins & Co. Inc. when it was purchased from Tannen? Or if it was changed at all?

I'm trying to figure out how to put a date on references to the Tarbell course. For example, my copy of Tarbell 3 is copyright 1943 by Louis Tannen and 1973 by D. Robbins & Co. Inc.

So, when I want to reference the E-Z Three-Way False Cut on page 199, should I date the reference 1943 (well before Frank Garcia published the Affas-Gaffas) or should I date it 1973 (more than a decade after the 1962 publication of Marked Cards and Loaded Dice, which explained Affas-Gaffas but did not have the name)?

Thanks!

Andru

D. Robbins did not change the books.
Tannens did not change the books after they were first published.
You should always cite the earliest published date of something.
It's likely that most of what Frank Garcia published was heavily inspired, or the same as, something published earlier.
"Affus-Gaffus" is a phrase used by Al Flosso in his act. That's likely where Garcia learned it. Then he recycled it for the title of the cut.

An exception is volume two, in which Karl Fulves's lesson on mentalism 33A was added in 1975 by Tannen's.
It's also usually worth looking at the original 1927 course, to see if what you want to reference is already in there or not.

Many thanks to both Richard and Dennis. You've both been very helpful and I really appreciate it.

I forgot to mention that I do have the original course and I do check it. I was only struggling to date things that were added in the books.

Thanks!

I've never see that version of volume 2 with the added chapter.

No idea if it is uncommon, I was thinking that most copies printed past 1975 have that chapter?! The listing on the Archive includes it.

I have one edition with the added chapter. It's from Robbins, copyright 1975, seventh printing.

The Fulve’s chapter is also included in the 11th printing.

My Third Printing (received as a gift in the early 1970s), copyright 1953, does not have the Fulves lesson. I am feeling so incomplete now. What is a boy to do?

Where is the Fulves chapter positioned in the book?

Post Script: With thanks to Andy Greget, and almost exactly 50 years after receiving the other one, I acquired the appropriate Tannen’s edition of Volume 2 with “Lesson 33A” therein.
