Law Enforcement Magicians

Postby Bob Farmer » April 8th, 2021, 4:29 pm

I am writing an essay on law enforcement personnel who are also magicians. I find the relationship between the law, law enforcement and magic to have many interesting connections. To start off, I would like to speak to anyone who is an FBI agent because there was an ABC show, "Deception," about Cameron Black, a superstar magician who joins the FBI as a consulting illusionist to help them solve crimes after his career is ruined by a scandal.

And I'd love to talk to the magician who was the consultant, Frances Menotti.

As I can't figure out how to insert a JPG here, I call your attention to the organization that was known as the Magicops, and will send you their logo by e-mail.

This doesn't help with contemporary magician/policemen, but, historically, super collector Chet Karkut of Connecticut and gambling collector (and Scarne associate) Audley Walsh of New Jersey come to mind as law enforcement professionals who were also active magicians. My guess is that they were both more prominent in the magic world than in law enforcement.
Here's some info on Magicops:

Norman Beck was also a police officer.
I believe John Archer was as well.

Bob, if you have not yet seen this article in the Florida Times-Union about a cop/magician who has written two books about the link between magic and law enforcement, it may be of interest/helpful:

Your essay promises to be an arresting one...

Wasn't J. Russell Duck (Rusduck) of "Cardiste" fame a policeman? I think so.

I'd say there seems to be a high level of correlation with magicians (and hobbyists) and many of the professional occupations (Doctors, Lawyers, etc.)
