John Carney Rocked Magic Inc. Hard!

Postby P.T. Murphy » August 19th, 2005, 8:13 am

Somebody used the word "exile" when talking about John Carney. Maybe he has not been at the Castle in a while...but good lord almighty...he has been out to Chicago!

Last night John lectured at Magic Inc. to a VERY appreciative crowd. John's lecture was informative, funny, and chock full o' MAGIC! His work on Ramsey's Cylinder and Coins was so wonderful that the crowd, much to John's surprise, insisted that he perform it a SECOND time right AFTER he had jsut explained everything in detail. It was as if the crowd refused to believe that something so magical could actually work the way it did!

To those of you who have NOT seen John's newest book or DVD's...do yourself a favor...GET THEM. In them Carney actually takes time to talk about what is really important about sleight of hand...and that is NOT the knuckle busting...but the attitude, mentally, physically and emotionally of the performer.

Carney was AWESOME! If you have been in exile John, welcome back! And thanks for coming to Chicago.

Just his talking on misdirection was worth the price of admission. And he signed my copy of Carneycopia.

Not to repeat what has already been said but this really was a superb lecture. John Carney performed several routines from his Book of Secrets (available at carneymagic.com) and Carneycopia while driving home (in an amenable way) the necessity of appreciating magic for what it is - not just technique but theater. A type of theater where you mustn't appear to be acting. It was a great thrill to see him and to see that Magic Inc., though Francis and Jay have left us, is still chugging along. Here's to 80 more years of a great magic shop!
