New David Blaine Stunt in the New York Times Today

Postby Richard Kaufman » August 19th, 2003, 7:16 am

A look at David Blaine's new stunt can be found at this link to today's New York Times. (You must register to read it, but registration is FREE.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/19/arts/19BLAI.html?th
"Beginning Sept. 5, Mr. Blaine says, he will spend 44 days in a Plexiglas box, 7 feet long by 7 feet tall by 3 feet wide, suspended over the Thames River in London. He will have just a set of clothes and a blanket, no food, and will receive only water via a feeding tube. He will have pens and paper to keep a journal (perhaps to be published later) and very little else to keep his mind occupied. His bodily functions will be handled with a small backpack containing diapers and a tube to urinate in."
The Times added, " Dr. Alexander E. Kuehl, an expert in emergency medicine and the director of public health in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., said that 44 days was close to the limit that a human body could last on only water. It's sort of an extreme Atkins diet," Dr. Kuehl said. "Certainly there are cases of relatively well-nourished people surviving for long periods, up to several months, with just snow or water. Hopefully he needs to lose a little weight. He added, however, that if the water were loaded with sugar or nutrients, the challenge would be much less impressive. "If it was clear Gatorade, you could probably survive on it forever," Dr. Kuehl said."
The piece also reveals that he's signed an agreement with ABC to do four more TV specials, and I would assume this stunt will be part of one of them. I've heard they're filming other material in London toward the end of September.

Glad to hear Blaine is back and has signed deals for additional TV specials. I hope he does well. I also hope he doesn't kill himself one of these days.... :(

Today magictimes.com posted links to over half a dozen articles on the new Blaine stunt: these are all UK news outlets. It appears at the moment as if the TV special that this stunt is built around is only going to air in the United Kingdom. There was not a single mention of an airing in the United States, and since Blaine comes out of the box on Oct.19 or 20, you'd think they'd have it scheduled by now.
BUT, for all of you who want to watch it, Britain's Channel 4 is webcasting the entire stunt, all 44 days of it, at this link: www.channel4.com/davidblaine
The link does NOT work yet.

It sucks if it doesnt air in the U.S., it means that he will probably put it out on DVD so we have to buy it. I think he is a better promoter and marketer than a magician, thats why he is where he is today.

I agree. I will be quite upset if I can't watch DB sit in a plexiglass box for 1,056 hours. Never the less, if it does come out on DVD, I'll at least be able to sit at my tv and watch that for 1,056 hours. Either way, I just can't think of anything that I'd rather do than watch a guy sit in a plexiglass box for 1,056 hours.

Mike.

Blaine's been filming in London this week, and according to some tabloid reports, the confusion/hysteria he created led to lots of shops being relieved of stock, while workers were mobbed and/or distracted.

I think it's an interesting coincidence that both David Blaine and Criss Angel are simultaneously filming new TV specials for October.

I find it a coincidence that he is taking on London, Daren Brown's stake.

Blaine's stunt would only be magical if he survived 44 days in a crystal box hanging over Baghdad.

It really doesn't matter if the special airs over here or not, since you can watch the business with the box on this website: www.channel4.com/davidblaine

Does anyone know if Blaine went in the box today as scheduled? It turns out that the live streaming on Channel 4's website is NOT free, and will cost you 5 pounds for the month.
Some interesting details about David's life were revealed in an article in one of the London papers. Go to magictimes.com and you'll see it. Seems he just another uppermiddle class kid from Jersey.

Shortly before entering the box, he said: "I'm not worried about the first three weeks, I'm worried about the second half of this when I start to lose my mind and everything gets really bad."

I enjoy Blaines magic and wish him great success but can he ever stop the whining? I thought you NY types were suppose to be tough.
