Notes From A Fellow Traveler by Derren Brown

Postby Travis » June 5th, 2023, 8:32 am

Anyone at the Magic Circle last night for Derren’s new book launch? I’m in the US and eager to pounce on this, but have yet been able find it.
Anyone got the skinny on this?

Cheers,
Travis

The book goes on sale tomorrow (Mon July 3rd) at 8pm BST (British Summer Time).

It is a limited edition. It seems as if the book will be released again at some later point as a regular edition.

This is the site where you will be able to buy the book tomorrow.

Just to be clear - the link above is open to anyone interested in buying a copy of the book.

The launch event at The Magic Circle is a separate thing. So anyone not attending the launch event at The Magic Circle can still use the link above to secure a copy.

The paperback version of the book will be made more widely available in the future (from what I understand).

Grrr. Had it on my calendar but missed the sale.

If anyone has one for sale or knows where I can buy a hardcover, please post info here or message me.

Thanks,

I did have hardback copy in my basket at 20.01 on Monday until it suddenly wasn’t…

Never mind, I’m sure I’ll be able to live without a copy.

I’ll pass.

Seems to have been a rather shambolic launch though.

I'm hoping the hardback will be re-upped sometime today. I'd love a copy to see if his views have matured since his last books (just a bit arrogant in the other two), but not losing sleep over them.

Just a heads up - once you select the edition you'd like - paperback or hardback, you will have to select the dropdown option of that same edition for you to be able to add it to the cart. Thought it was sold out - tis not, just a bit difficult to navigate.

The foreword of the book states that the Hardback version is limited to 1500 copies. However…. If anyone really wants a copy ….. it might be worth checking eBay.

I read the book when it was first released, and I was really impressed. The tour diary parts were fascinating and a unique glimpse behind the scenes of what it takes to tour a show. I was staggered by just how much thought Derren and his team put into their shows - down to every last detail. And Derren explains how he goes about this process. It’s inspiring to read, but shows how much effort is involved. I’m sure any performers reading this will gain incredible inspiration and insight into how to improve their own shows.

I guess to address the elephant in the room (and I hope anyone buying the book already knows this) - it is not a book of Derren revealing his methods. He uses a few simple tricks such as ambitious card and billet switch to illustrate ways of making routines more effective, but not magical or mentalist techniques or methods.

In summary - it’s an incredible book. I’ve never read anything like it and will stand for many years as a huge milestone in magical publishing. Incidentally, if anyone would like to invest in the Deluxe Collectors Edition which sold out almost immediately (only 300 copies worldwide) it might be worth checking eBay.

I am looking forward to reading the book.

However, I predict that because this is not a book of methods, the secondary market for this book will not want for unread copies within a few years.

Derren has mentioned that second editions will be printed today on his Instagram.

I’m about a hundred pages in and I’m enjoying the book. For me, Absent Finales is worth the price of admission. A lot of food for thought in a small chapter. I will admit though, I am astonished that he admittedly forgets the sequence of routines in the show. I couldn’t imagine doing that myself.
