Potter & Potter Summer Auction

P&P's Summer Auction online catalog is up.
Posters, many props, and books (including several lots of Fulves stuff--that should catch some attention). One each of both copies of the Harbin book (original and pirated), Caveney's Carter book, a complete file of Jay’s Journal of Anomalies, all six original issues of Marlo's Magazine (signed), and a lot more stuff including ephemera. There's also a rather unusual offering; one of Val Valentino's "Masked Magician" suits; from the mask down to the shoes. Now there's something you don't see every day.

It's an interesting auction, but the big problem with Potter auctions is the massive auction house fee: +20% of the high bid. Then tax on top of the fee + bid. Then add shipping.

There's a nice looking set of (allegedly) Danny Dew Paul fox chrome cups but the opening bid is $200. No bids yet but if someone wins with that bid that would be $240 + tax + shipping. If they're really Danny Dew cups and in excellent contition there are probably people willing to pay that, though the cups market took a huge hit many years ago with RNT II and cheap chinese imports. Before that prices were very high. I paid $600 for a set of Danny Dew copper Paul Fox cups bought from Pete Biro on ebay (he sold them there deliberately to piss off Jeff Busby ).

I know that most big auction houses do the fee thing, but when buying stuff that's already expensive, paying a fee on top of it, then taxing the fee, is really annoying.

That's not a "massive fee" by any means. Other auction houses take 30%. Nobody cares if you think it's "annoying"--that's how auction houses earn their money! If you don't like it, don't bid. But don't complain about it.

And if those cups are listed as Danny Dew cups, then you can be assured they are, since the folks at Potter know their stuff.

I would probably be less annoyed if they didn't bury the mention of the fee down in a .pdf you have to download, rather than mentioning it either in the "How to buy", or even "Terms and Conditions" sections.

It's so much fun to look at these catalogs! In particular, lots of beautiful apparatus in really nice condition in this one. And a cool Genii collectable and Sol Stone's Close Up Kit.
