I've had experiences at home where my backup drives have let me down. How much redundancy is there usually in a commercial site's backup system?

Good hosts provide robust redundancy/recovery.
The Café has "Steve's buddy Gene".

I've noticed an uptick in new memberships on other magicians forums. Seems like everyone is edging their bets!

Autocorrect is a harsh mattress.
Effect and method are inextricably linked.

I will claim credit even if it doesn't happen on Friday! I have been studying Donald Trump!
Re: Disappearing Magic Cafe!
Of course the Magic Cafe will be back at some point in 2022, with maybe only dozens, or perhaps thousands of posts missing ... that was never really the issue.
The issue is the fundamental dishonesty from Brooks and his minions surrounding the "offline" period, and the implications that such "fundamental dishonesty" has as it might relate to the operation of the Magic Cafe in general.
As noted previously, the explanations offered to date are so childish in their reading, nobody who is sane could be expected to believe them.
Folks need to read Brooks Facebook comments (linked to on page #1 of this thread) ... where Gene basically states that there was so much untoward going on he couldn't even comment on it, and that if folks only knew what terrible things were happening they'd have an entirely different opinion on the matter of the Magic Cafe being offline for so long.
Which of course, is the entire point ... that Brooks, rather than B.S.'ing everybody ... release an honest assessment of what's actually going on, and reap the benefits of not having to cover his rear-end after all the lies he's told as to why the Cafe is offline for (so far) almost an entire month!

Gene from Facebook:
“Hi Chris. The old server is basically toast and we're having a new server built that needs certain software to run properly. This is at a different datacenter, by the way, since the former datacenter has not been the same since they told me the server was moved. I don't know what happened there (nothing public) but they were basically good until recently. Anyway, while all main software has been installed there are a couple modules that are pending that my techs are working on and the 500 error is the result of those modules not yet ready. To be very clear, however, ALL data is safe and sound with the exception of those three or so hours the old server was up after the move and before the drive crashed. I even have a copy of the data on my computer here at home and the one at my office. I can also confirm that there was no foul play here. The Cafe wasn't hacked, nor was anything else on the server. Again, the dataset is fully complete with all 5.2M+ posts intact.”

Re: Disappearing Magic Cafe!
This looks like an "official" Magic Cafe page. If so, why, I wonder does it say "This MAY be due to an automatic backup process....."
MAY [b][i] be?
Don't they know?

Looks like they lost everything after June 26, unless that was the day it went down.

Although I am not absolutely certain, I am thinking that was when the site went down. If not, it was very soon after.

Robert77 wrote:Jack Shalom wrote:The two best threads on the Cafe are kind of buried: Dan Harlan's brilliant equivoque thread where he does an equivoque in "real time" in the thread with cafe posters; and Tomas Bloomberg's terrific coincidence card trick which is contained within an esoteric probability thread.
I would LOVE to read that equivoque thread. The best tutoring I've had in it was from a lecture by Eugene Burger. The lecture was, literally, so amazing that magi who paid to sit in, exposed to the modus, literally did not see it coming when it was demonstrated. That was decades ago but I believe the response was "wait, what!?"
Well here you go: The Dan Harlan thread is here and the Tomas Blomberg one is here.
It took me a bit to find those. The Blomberg one was particularly tricky (pardon the pun) to find.

BTW in the Harlan section there's a thread on the pass where Harlan gives advice that I felt was quite helpful to me.
