For how long was the SAM convention held in the summer?
How recently did it switch to compete directly with MagiFest in January?

This is the first year, I believe, where SAM and MagiFest take place on the same dates. Bad timing.

The SAM Convention runs January 15-18, 2022, MagiFest runs January 20-22, 2022, so they are close but not overlapping dates.

Exactly overlapping or not, it's directly competing.
When did SAM make that choice to move to January?

A few years ago. The SAM always has its biggest turnout in Las Vegas. I think they moved to winter to get away from MAGIC Live every year.

One of the reasons they moved to January is when they had summer convention in direct competition with Magic Live, they want to cancel their hotel commitment. They were allowed to cancel the original date but had to rebook within a certain time frame. January was the best date and time frame available. I must for most people going to Las Vegas in the dead of winter in most of the country is more appealing than going in the heat of summer.
As for MagiFest, that was my home convention for many, many years. Horace Marshall and later myself exhibited there over 65 years in a row. Last year with the Covid, Josh and Andi made the change to the fall convention to get people a convention that many people just plain needed. Now as things have settled down somewhat, they are going back to the original legacy time of January. Though both are competing with each other, I am not sure that either will suffer from it as they both seem to draw from different demographics of magic.
No, I will not be at either. I am a 45 year track and field official and it is my busiest time with the indoor track season so I cannot get away.
I hope both conventions have a great time of magic and fellowship.

This and other reasons is why we moved. We had very positive responses from those summertime workers who could finally attend our convention. Also, in 2019, we very carefully coordinated with MagiFest to be 2-3 weeks apart for 2022. With Covid and a hotel change for MagiFest, they had to move closer.

I live in Las Vegas and work in front of The Golden Nugget busking. I got some calls for a ride from and to the airport. If you dont want to stand in a long taxi ride or wait long uber waits then email me and I will being giving rides to and and from the airport. My rates are half the price of uber and a third of the price of the taxis. My car is an SUV so can hold 4 people plus luggage or less people and large props. I used to use it to transport my illusions. Email me for details and send me your flight info at thechrisrandallshow@gmail.com

That is ultra-cool! Love to see magicians in the trenches. Plus, you can get them before they go into the casino, while they're still in a good mood, and before they lose it all to the house. And if someone happens to have a great night at the tables, then they're likely to be feeling very generous on the way out. Get'em coming and going!
