Rumour - Blaine headed for Vegas residency

Postby CraigMitchell » October 8th, 2021, 5:00 pm

Interwebs are reporting that Blaine is eyeing a residency at Resorts World in Vegas

“ Magician and “endurance artist” David Blaine is rumored to be nearing a deal to perform at Resorts World on the Las Vegas Strip.

A source familiar with the deal says David Blaine is about ready to ink an agreement with AEG Presents, the company responsible for programming in The Theater at Resorts World and other venues.”

A residency? That's a lot of frogs to swallow.

It's not possible, from what what I know, to perform those types of things every night for an extended period. David has to fast in order to keep the frogs in his stomach.

I don't understand how people would enjoy watching someone swallowing a frog(s) and/or regurgitating them, let alone paying money to see it. I think it's gross and inhumane.

Yes, but afterwards the frog has an amazing story to tell his buddies.

Don't how doing those stunts several nights a week, (or once a week) could take it's toll in the long run. Years ago, when those acts were more common, in vaudeville, sideshows, circuses, etc., they could be doing this a number of times a DAY.
(don't know what their health track record was doing that though.)
Keep in mind those who regularly eat fire, do human blowtorches, etc., destroy the enamel on their teeth for starters, and sword swallowers have punctured their stomaches, damaged their system from the mouth, down the G.I. tract to the stomach in time. ("Sword Swallower's greatest enemy, is a sneeze.")

If Blaine was regularly performing in a Vegas venue, it might be with days off between performance nights, or doing different stunts, for different shows. Even with oxygen, wonder how being underwater for 10+ minutes a NIGHT could effect him in the long run.

After eating all of those frogs, David should come full circle and conclude his geek sequence with an homage to Le Pétomane. A frog flatulence finale!

A residency implies a stage, and an audience seated such that they can view that stage.
This is a far cry from a camera close up ... and might indicate that Blaine's "feats of strength" could be modified to become more sleight of hand based than actual physical acts.

It would seem that, with Blaine's endless resources ... that "frog swallowing" (for example) would be easy to modify into such a sleight of hand scenario, especially with Blaine physically distanced from his admiring audience, as opposed to having a camera jammed in his face, effectively forcing him to do as he claims he is doing (which is swallowing a frog).

He could follow the criss angel lead of ‘performing’ those types of effects by showing recordings of them on a screen. The best part of criss angel’s first live cirque show was still the camera tricks.

I have seen Blaine's live show twice. It was fantastic. Everything was done live. Enormous hi-def video screens gave everyone an intimate view of what was happening on stage.

I echo Richard's comments. Blaine's live show was edge of your seat, gripping live entertainment the likes of which you will not see elsewhere.

I would take 'residency' with a pinch of salt ... the term is not what it used to be and in Vegas, could simply be a handful of shows sprinkled throughout a month with sufficient time to recuperate from the physical stunts. At 5000 seats - its an arena size venue to fill ( as a point of comparison Criss Angel is at 1600 seats / Copperfield at 750 ... two sold out weekend shows would be the equivalent of 6 shows for Angel / and 13 for DC )

If it does come to be - it would be a great addition to the Vegas magic scene. And place Blaine amongst other star headliners at the Resorts World Theatre including Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Katy Perry.

I saw Blaine in Worcester, MA the first iteration of his tour in 2017 (where Asi Wind performed at the midpoint) and then again in 2018 at the MGM Grand theatre outside of Washington DC and then the finale of his tour at the Kings Theatre in his hometown of Brooklyn. Each show was quite the tour de force—he was dry, funny, personable, and amazing. He sat down and did a Q&A with the audience after his water endurance stunt (where his small daughter came out on stage and pressed her hands against the glass of the tank).

He also noted that none of the frogs he swallowed were harmed—his daughter had named them all.
