A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
Re "David Copperfield's History of Magic": Even though it's cheaper at amazon, the Barnes & Noble "Excluse B&N Edition" will have an additional chapter not available elsewhere:

Already ordered.
What’s a wee bit confusing is they are both advertised with the same page count.
I’m sure it’s just an oversight.

Will the hardcover through Barnes & Noble be considered the "Exclusive B&N Edition" with the additional chapter?

You can order either edition on the Barnes & Noble website. Make sure to pick the one that is listed as "Exclusive B&N Edition."

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
Unfortunately, B&N doesn't ship to the UK at the moment (for "Covid reasons"). Not only that, but I've also just received an email from Amazon saying that my pre-ordered copy will not be available until November 30...

So, different options for ordering the book include:
David will also be talking and answering questions about his book at TalkShopLive on Sept 23 (see above link).

I thought the conversation was very enjoyable and fun.
I don't have David's autograph, so I went for the signed (bookplate) edition. (Ships Oct 27) Thanks for posting this!

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
A book is nice, but it's no substitute for seeing the objects in person. Here's hoping that Copperfield opens up his Museum in the not-too-distant future to more than the few "lucky visitors" he now selects. How about following the Magic Castle model and allowing Genii subscribers to visit the Museum once a year?

There is currently no framework for organizing tours. They just come together. And the groups are extremely small. No way to do it for Genii subscribers.

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
As stated, I'm aware of the current situation where there are only non-formal tours for a small number of lucky visitors. My point is that I hope Copperfield prioritizes turning what is now the largest and most important private collection of magic history into the International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts, truly living up to the name he gave it.
I would hope the proceeds of this book go entirely to realizing that goal.

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
B&N arrived in Brooklyn today. Lovely cover, nicely put together for a general audience book. A bit odd as to which pieces of magic history, besides the obvious, they chose to highlight. Mr. Copperfield is not shy about the number of times his own image appears.

I fear that it will likely end up, as just more fodder, for Potter & Potter

I ordered a signed edition and the Barnes and Noble edition and used a mail forwarding service from the US to UK if that helps anyone. (Marco and Andrew)

I picked up a B&N copy at B&N today. It rang up as $35, but I showed the clerk the web page with the price as $29.99 and she adjusted it.

Signed edition arrived last week. Very handsome book. Bookplate signature appears to be hand-signed (albeit a more formal signature than some I've seen on-line). Looking forward to reading it.

I went with the B&N Exclusive with the added Orson Welles material. A beautifully produced book throughout IMO. What one may call a coffee table book. Nice to be able to buy a book of this caliber at such an affordable price!

I just received a communication that several buyers have posted evidence on Facebook suggesting the signatures were done via autopen.
Can anyone with knowledge of the situation please confirm that the signatures in this edition are hand signed (or not)?

This is one of at least three templates seen so far. So if yours doesn't match this, it may still be hinky.
And there are some which look absolutely legit.

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
If the autopen rumor is true, it will make for a lot of (rightfully) PO'd buyers.
Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
As I recall, author Margaret Atwood developed a version of the autopen which allowed the author to interact with fans via a video / audio link while she inscribed books remotely.
As the author became less inclined to travel long distances to promote her books due to her advancing years I believe this was a case of necessity becoming the mother of invention.
Mostly, however, authors will gladly hand-sign thousands of bookplates or pages for ‘tipping in’ in advance of a new book being published. It’s part of the job.

For reference: here is the original ad from talkshoplive https://talkshop.live/product/JwEZEy1rr ... utographed. It does state "autographed" (albeit not by whom [or what]).
I have a customer service inquiry in to Talkshoplive. We'll see what they have to say.

Thanks for posting this! I've never been a huge Copperfield fan, but I really enjoyed the interview (good questions and thoughtful answers). In particular I really liked hearing David talk about Danny Tsoukalas, who had a magic counter at the big Macy's Herald Square store and whom David had seen and been inspired by when he was a kid. That same old magic counter is now in Copperfield's museum. Tsoukalas specialized in one trick with a simple gimmicked wooden penetration board. My uncle brought me to Macy's once to see him when I was a kid, and I still remember how magical it was. It's nice to know the impact it made on David too.

Search Twitter for "copperfield autopen". There are at least 5 templates in play. When people identify the source of their books, Talkshoplive is the source of the problematic signatures. I haven't seen anyone say that they have a questionable signature from Premiere.

That's super scummy that they use multiple autopen templates to fool people.

FWIW, I just received a reply from TSL Support:
"We have been asked this question a lot and escalated these concerns to Seller and after consulting with the publisher, it has been concluded, with absolute certainty, that these signatures all had variations which indicates they were indeed hand signed and not auto-signed."

Could be a PR stunt a la Houdini to get people to start talking about the new book. The microsoft interview hinted at this with talk about technology, pens, and fooling the public.

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
Technically, it is his signature. Signing your name is such an automatic, mechanical process anyway. What difference does it make if it's done by a human or a robot. There's good evidence that Copperfield is a robot anyway. Putting on all those nightly shows probably turns you into one. If you have the technological means to speed up a tedious task, why not?
I'll take a discounted book.

Re: A Note Regarding the Upcoming Copperfield Museum Book
early 17th century: from French autographe or late Latin autographum, from Greek autographon, neuter of autographos ‘written with one's own hand’, from autos ‘self’ + graphos ‘written’
early 17th century: via Latin from Greek, neuter of automatos ‘acting of itself’, from autos ‘self’
Maybe the "auto" in graph has taken on a new interpretation. Isn't technology an extension of the mind and body anyway?
