NPH's Box One is incredible

Postby CraigMitchell » August 1st, 2021, 10:17 am

Do yourselves a favor and go buy NPH's Box One

https://store.theory11.com/products/boxone

"an ever-evolving game of trivia, codes, puzzles, and discovery only from the mind of neil patrick harris"

The attention to detail is simply fantastic - and surprises that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.

So. Much. Fun.

I am incapable of solving puzzles. Would I enjoy this? The website tells you zero about it.

Also available at Target, which I believe had an exclusive on it for a while. Amazon lists it, but they're overcharging. ($50 vs $30). Richard, the reviews at Target.com (nearly 800 of them) may help you decide if it's for you.

I'm not a major puzzle person myself - but an enormous amount of thought and effort went into the design and various components of this product ( along with some fun magic principles )

I don't want to give too much away - but there was a beautiful 'aha' moment for me that I haven't experienced in a 'game' in a very long time - genuine surprise & delight from a 'card' game.

There's also an online help section if you get stuck at any point. I do think every magician should purchase this - if nothing else, just to see the sheer love that went into bringing this product to market.

Kudos to Jonathan Bayme, NPH and everyone else that brought it to life.

I love puzzles. I got this for myself a couple of months ago, but haven't had the time to do more than peek in the box. I'll need a couple of hours free, I think, to attack it properly.

If you like puzzles, have a look at the Cluebox games - marketed as 'an escape room in a box', they are small wooden boxes that have several puzzles built in that you have to solve to open the box and find the secret inside. The first two are out already, and the third is on its way (the Kickstarter was very successful).

For the full experience - DON'T do too much pre-reading on the product as you will invariably hit upon spoilers. Just hit the buy button and enjoy the show ;-)

Mr. Mitchell's point is well taken. The BGG reviews cited above are spoiler free, and the comments section have all potential spoilers blacked out.

A few observations:
Box One is not a legacy game (where components are marked and destroyed) and the game includes detailed instructions on how to reset the game after you are done with it--making it ideal to pass along to another gamer. As such, I expect the secondary market to have plenty of supply eventually. My local Target (and the target website) has a bunch of them at list price.
To the best of my research, any upcharging for a special limited exclusive edition is malarkey.
It was a bit curious to me that solo play was emphasized so strongly in this release because you can certainly play it with more than one person. Also, to me, 90% of the fun of real escape rooms are the memorable player interactions during the escape attempt.
