Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
Apparently you have not heard. The container ship from China ran afoul of some extremely heavy weather and lost over 1,800 containers overboard. It is not known if the book was lost, and it will take at least one month to find out (the ship is currently in Osaka Bay, Japan). So the answer to your question is no, it's not on schedule. More information can be found on Richard's Facebook page.

The incident even made this week's issue of The Week magazine. No mention of Mr. Jennings of course...

Since on average a container ship can hold up to 16,000 cargo containers, I think the odds are in our favor.

This one had, I think, 14,000 containers.

I didn't know this kind of thing happened post 1492 or so. I could understand if the whole ship went down, but some containers fell overboard? Sounds strange. They didn't secure them correctly or something?

Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
Jack -- The ships carry standard "Conex" shipping containers. They are 40 ft long, and 8-1/2 or 9-1/2 feet tall. They are stacked 8 or higher on deck. The ship has a framework on top to help stabilize the containers, and the containers themselves are secured to each other.
In calm seas, everything is stable. But in rougher water, when the ship rolls to port or starboard, the stack becomes unstable and the boxes start falling.
If you want to know more about Richard's ship, see here.

Wow, thanks for the pictures. But really, it's ridiculous to think that in the 21st century, no one can think of a way to secure the containers better? I assume it's a function of trying to squeeze more containers on a ship at the risk of accident.

Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
I have little doubt that the containers were as secured as modern, human-made, technology allows. The sea can be a major bitch. Until you've been in seas where solid green water is pouring over the bow and rails, and looking out the wheelhouse windows all you can see is a wall of ocean and no sky, you cannot comprehend its incredible power.

Not a clue. They are stuck at the port of Los Angeles for some reason. They have to go from there to Murphy's and then to your dealer. I'd say it will be a month.

Because of the pandemic shipping and work at the ports is a total mess. They are short of workers like everyone else.

Ian, that sounds right if it is going by sea but not by air.
Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
This isn't about shipping time or mode of transport, this about a delay of over a month at a port in the U.S with no reason given?
That sounds unbelievable to me.

Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
A combination of shipping and mode. Everything is backed up. Just getting your stuff on a boat takes a full month longer than before. And due to a shortage of workers at the port in LA, stuff just sits there.
You may find it hard to believe, but yes, the books have been sitting at the port in LA for a month.
Just got some updates today, so hopefully there will be some forward movement shortly.

Shipping from L.A. to Europe is a two month lead time for the items my work ships. Much longer than normal.

My son and his wife have an online business and they're having the same delays as Richard noted with the products they sell, products manufactured in China and taking forever and a day to reach them. It has been a real nightmare with no good end in sight, from what they tell me.

I recently ordered a small tool from Banggood, out of China. It took four days to get from China to Atlanta. Then it sat in the post office in Atlanta for 10 days before it eventually came to Huntsville, AL.

Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
What a book. I’m still swimming in it.
The decades of work on the book speak for themselves, but I’d love to know more about the photograph sessions. Julie Eng’s beautiful photography and Jason England’s skilled hands. Wonderful.
The photos are so exacting it’s easy to take them for granted. They deliver precise information at a glance.
There must be photos or video of the work being done in the studio. I’d love a peek.
How long did Jason England have with the material to prepare for the photos?
How long did they work together to get the right angles?
Thank you, Richard!
Cheers and Happy New Year!

Re: Mr. Jennings Takes it Easy is Here!
There are no photos of us working. Jason had the text in advance and read it, though we were both reading the text during the photo sessions. It took five or six days to shoot all the photos. The whole process was an endurance test: get each photo right and also take them as quickly as possible. Julie and Jason were great to work with, but frankly I don't think any of us are looking forward to doing it again, but we will for "Mr. Jennings Takes it Tough," of which I wrote the first 500 pages during the first year of the pandemic.

Normally mail from Canada to the UK is remarkably fast. In fact faster than sending it from one part of Canada to another. And if mailed to the US next door it seems to take ages and ages and ages. However, a letter from Toronto to the UK takes only 3 days. I am not sure about parcels but I don't think much longer. Of course with the pandemic everything is a bit crazy at the moment.
