Threads section seconded - between Abbot's floating ball routine and the invention of the IT reel - t's sensible to expand the Thornton Windlass section

What is the point of keeping the Thornton Windlass material in? You can't buy one. Old ones are difficult to fix and keep in shape.

Does that mean that the piece on the Neyhart Rising Cards is liable to be cut?

There are also tricks using music box innards - perhaps a section on mechanical marvels.Richard Kaufman wrote:What is the point of keeping the Thornton Windlass material in? You can't buy one. Old ones are difficult to fix and keep in shape.

Re: Greater Magic
Just curious why you think the clear cups is worthy of mention. It’s a trick that’s only relevant or interesting to people who already know how the trick is done. It’s mutual magical masturbation at its finest. Isn’t it?

This is the big thread for suggesting content for the book:
https://www.forums.geniimagazine.com/vi ... hp?t=51504
Probably best to add ideas there, so they're all grouped together.

I particularly liked the moment where the cups are swapped right for left but the ball stays in place.Brad Henderson wrote:Just curious why you think the clear cups is worthy of mention.
The base effect has not been so actively explored recently. Just a mention - say between the sponge ball and shells/cups chapters.
The Vernon routine as distillation of methods - and the Chop cup deserve their due. Maybe the Tommy Wonder estate would consent to some mention of his routine.

Greater Magic was never meant to be an encyclopedia. It's a sampling across the diverse categories of magic. My job is to make the sampling interesting and meaningful going forward.

You can't do most cigarette tricks with joints because they're too flimsy.

Update the tipsy Cardini theme only now it's joints. They could be made more substantial with a bit of cardboard.

Yeah, "munchy Cardini" where one manipulates cards with one hand and feeds oneself a large sandwich with the other during the routine.

Re: A New Edition of Greater Magic is Coming
Glad to see someone noticed that little ad we snuck into the latest issue of Genii.
I've just finished editing Max Maven's new chapter on Mentalism.
My goal is to keep the price as low as possible and the quality as high as it can be, which is why I'll be printing in China rather than the US.
The original Greater Magic measures 6 x 9; the new books will measure 7 x 10. The type will be easier to read.
My illustrator, who is already busy at work on multiple chapters, is Ever Elizalde. Here is a dummy page--a mock up (it happens to have dummy text I snatched from the new Malini chapter), into which I placed a sample drawing he did for me as a test before I hired him. When you put it side by side with a page of the original Greater Magic his work is harmonious with Tarbell's.

You clearly like this typeface and have used it in many projects. I'm curious why you favor it?
What was the original Greater Magic typeface? As a reader, I find it an extremely comfortable one, though I recognize that it feels a bit old-fashioned today.

I'm not sure what font the original Greater Magic uses. It might be Times Roman, which I dislike.
The font I often use is Century because it's easy to read.

Hmm... WhatTheFont suggests it's some version of Caslon, known for its comfortable readability...

I haven't been purchasing a lot of magic books in the past few years (I ran out of shelf space), breaking that rule only for the recent Steve Forte tomes ... but this is something I'm ordering as soon as Richard announces that he's put an order page up.

Hooker's puppet bears its tale
Ah, magic meets Herodotus, adding Hooker to the story of Miltiades?Richard Kaufman wrote:The description of the Hooker Rising Cards will be updated for correctness. One of Hooker's greatest tricks was routining things in such a way that it was extremely difficult to later recall exactly what you saw.

This looks really great, RK! I really like how the design pays homage to the progenitor while advancing the design of the book.
Will the paper choice be consistent with your reprint of Greater Magic or will you go with another look?
Also, I can't wait to see that massive slipcover!
Finally, will the books have dustjackets too?
