Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (October 2018)

Uh-huh-huh … He Said “Ween”

It’s Halloween time at The Magic Castle. The Boo Crew is gearing up for the event staff’s most ambitious week yet with “Murder Mansion,” an interactive mystery with the characters and clues all around the mansion. It all takes place from the 24th to the 31st. For details, see Ben Roman’s three-page article in the October edition of the Academy Newsletter.

The Halloween season kicks off on October 8 with Erika Larsen’s “Spookfest” Perk. Erika will be hosting some “maniacal magic, eerie entertainers, and ghost stories” down in the Inner Circle starting at 8PM. No cost, no RSVP. All Members welcome!

DRAW!

The fall edition of the Strolling Magic Showdown will take place in the Inner Circle on October 16. See page 21 of the newsletter for the details of this popular event.

Bingo! (More Ween …)

The Halloween edition of the new, highly popular, and now “legendary” Bingo nights is on October 22. These sell out fast. See the October newsletter (page 21) for ticket details.

Houdini’s Hiatus

The Houdini Séance at the Castle will be closing down on November 30 for refurbishing. It will not reopen until sometime in the summer of 2019 (expected August). The Spirit Counselor at the Castle, Marisol Alvarez, is still taking reservations for this month and November at 323-851-3313, extension 303.

Costumed Members Only

The Members Only Halloween Party will be on October 24. Dinner reservations are not required, but HIGHLY recommended (there will be Pin Specials available that night). Members are limited to five guests (total of six in the party). COSTUMES ARE REQUIRED.

Puttin’ on the Fritz

The next Gourmet Dinner and Wine night will be November 6, featuring the wines of Fritz Underground Winery and, of course, the off-menu gourmet food of Executive Chef Jason Sperber. These evenings sell out quickly, so see page 11 of the newsletter for details.

Puttin’ on the Ritz

Speaking of gourmet food, while Houdini is on vacation, Chef Jason and Castle sommelier Ian Prichard are taking over the Séance Chamber for their special “Chef’s Table” evenings. Special six-course dinners, with paired wines, designed/selected especially for the diners. Eight to 12 guests, includes a private close-up magic show as well as tickets to the Palace of Mystery show. There is a couple of sample menus published in the October newsletter in in Ian’s “Message in a Bottle” column. These special events will kick off in January.

Another Peek into November: Gardner Fans Take Note

The eighth annual “Celebration of Mind,” the honoring of Martin Gardner is schedule for November 1. See page 34 of the newsletter for details. All Members are welcome.

Bye-Bye and Welcome …

After six years as the Assistant Librarian of the William Larsen Memorial Library, Lisa Cousins is relocating to New Mexico to be near her granddaughter. Lisa did a lot for the library, in particular creating a section that Associate Members can visit. She will be missed.

Filling the position will be Joe Fox (who is ALWAYS there, so they might as well put him to work). Librarian Bill Goodwin will have more on Joe in the November issue of the newsletter.

Pork osso bucco, garlic whipped potatoes, and root vegetables.
Vegetarian: Three cheese stuffed shells, garden zucchini, and wild mushroom bolognaise.
Vegan: Angle hair with garden zucchini and wild mushroom bolognaise.

October 8, 9, & 10
Sausage and peppers over penne pasta with spicy tomato sauce and Academy cheese bread.
Vegetarian: Crispy eggplant, potato gnocchi, roasted squash, sherry wine, and pink peppercorn cream.
Vegan: Miso roasted garden eggplant and zucchini over cilantro ginger basmati rice.

October 15, 16, & 17
Shrimp Alfredo, sautéed spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and squid ink tagliatelle pasta.
Vegetarian: Wild mushroom Alfredo, sautéed spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and tagliatelle pasta.
Vegan: Vegetable Korma: Carrots, potatoes, onions, bell peppers, zucchini, ginger, and jalapenos simmered in a light curry broth.

October 22, 23, & 24
Braised short ribs, roasted garlic whipped potatoes, braised carrots, and crispy shallots.
Vegetarian: Butternut squash and kale lasagna, Parmesan cream, and Academy cheese bread.
Vegan: Lentil ragout, roasted carrots, kale, tomatoes, pumpkin, peppers, in white wine tomato broth.

October 29, 30, & 31
Cider brined pork loin, au gratin potatoes, spicy braised turnip greens, and smoked maple balsamic glaze.
Vegetarian: Japanese pumpkin ravioli, spicy braised turnip greens, and sun-dried tomato cream.
Vegan: Spicy chili braised tofu and turnip greens with crispy potatoes.

(Remember that the vegetarian and vegan specials are available all week and to non-members; just ask your server.)

(I used to check the "Now Appearing" part of the Castle website, but I noticed months ago that they stopped listing the future performers and only display the current week's schedule.)

Thanks Ross, glad to be of service. The AMA did that for a very good reason: Performers were getting inundated with requests to be on their guest lists from people who were advised by the media about "how to get into The Magic Castle." One way was to look at the future listings, Google a magician's contact information, and send them emails. It's still happening, but not nearly as much.

Members can still access the complete schedule in their Member's Only Page on the Castle site.

This week's schedule won't be posted here until tomorrow as it is Halloween Week and will run through the 31st.

Thank you, Dustin. It makes sense that the Castle website no longer displays the upcoming schedules.

Richard: Thank you for the reminder, I often forget that the schedules are in Genii, too. And while I'm at it, I also really like the "Knights at The Magic Castle" reports. I always love to hear what's going on at the Castle. What a wonderful place!
