Peter DePaula Event on The Magic Show, in NYC

Postby Herb » September 11th, 2018, 9:42 pm

Friends,

On October 4, The Parent Assembly of the Society of American Magicians is presenting, “The Magic Show” the Musical and Me, a presentation and lecture by Peter DePaula. After the huge success of The Magic Show on Broadway in 1974 Peter was selected to play the lead role of The Magican in the show’s national tour, which he performed across the United States. His presentation will provide a behind-the-scenes view of performing and touring with the show, and Peter will also teach material from the repertoire of close-up magic that he would perform on television when promoting the production. This should be a fascinating and compelling event that provides insight to many aspects of magic at a time of significant transition for the art. A full description is below. (Parent Assembly also has an upcoming lecture with Gary Brown, on September 21, see link below.)

New York City

The Magic Show caused a major sea change in the world of magic. It opened in May 1974 at the Cort Theatre and ran for 1,920 performances, closing on December 31, 1978. Doug Henning was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and director Grover Dale was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical.

This musical turned magic around 180 degrees, changing the way magicians dressed, the way it incorporated musical accompaniment, and how it was presented in general. It opened the door for the TV magic special and tweaked the interest of the television and film industry in exploring the art of magic.

That same year a young, upcoming New York magician named Peter DePaula auditioned for the national tour of The Magic Show. He was put through a rigorous audition cycle before being selected to play the role of The Magician in the national tour which ran for one year across the United States.

Peter will give a discussion on the show’s illusions and a backstage look at how this show was put together. He will also demonstrate and teach some of the magic that he did on TV to promote the show across the country. This presentation in part was given at The Magic Castle in Los Angeles for the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Broadway show. It was well received with great reviews from Peter's peers. Peter will also discuss what the magic scene was like in New York during that period. This will be an eventful evening of magic and the history of magic which marked the turning point of the art as we know it today.

Parent Assembly also has a lecture scheduled with Gary Brown on September 21 at Fantasma Magic: http://www.magicsampa1.com/september-le ... nyc-10001/

Our event with Peter DePaula, who starred in the national tour of The Magic Show in 1974 and 1975 is being held tomorrow night, October 4. The details are in the main post.

Peter has a ton of stories to tell about his experiences in the show including how he was cast, how he learned the materials, what it was like to perform the many stage illusions, etc. He'll also be talking about the New York magic scene at the time he was cast, - and his mentors and teachers such as Tony Slydini - and much more.

Hope some folks here will be able to join us.
