Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (July 2018)

Postby Dustin Stinett » July 2nd, 2018, 10:54 pm

Some Like it Hot

The heat of summer at the Castle includes the annual “Presto-Beano” Chili Cook-off competition. Among the eight contestants are General Manager Joe Furlow and President Jim Steinmeyer. The special judges include actresses Kate Linder and Carolyn Hennesy, TV/Internet chefs Jeff Kawakami and Jonathan Sadowski, “international foodie” Darren Ross (The Magic Castle Hotel), as well as former AMA prez Dale Hindman, so there will be no playing favorites as far as we know. The event—which always sells out—is on Monday, July 9 at 8PM in the inner circle. See the ad in the July newsletter for details.

Paper or Plastic?

Chris Taggart, the Beverage Manager at the Castle, announced that the Castle will soon be using paper straws at all its bars and in the dining room, joining the ranks of establishments across the world saying “no” to the plastic kind which pose a threat to the environment. Patrons will need to ask for straws in the future as well, as they will no long be automatically included with drinks.

Schedule Notes

The Magic Castle and the AMA offices will be closed on July 4 in observation of Independence Day.

The Castle will be closed to members, reservations, and walk-ins on Thursday, July 19 for an evening buy-out.

Houdini’s Vacation

Sometime in early 2019, the Houdini Séance will shut down for renovations and improvements to the special effects (wait, those aren’t caused by Harry’ ghost?). Members Mike Elizalde, John
Gaughan, and Max Maven, séance mediums Leo Kostka, Rob Zabrecky, and Misty Lee, as well some local Houdini experts will be among those on the team working on the new extravaganza.

Why Wait?

The famous WC Fields pool table that was on display in the Inner Circle—and lent the nearby bar its name—has been returned (by request) to the Fields Family Foundation. The movie prop has been on loan, originally to the Society for the Preservation of Variety Arts, since the 1980s. Now that it is gone, it made little sense to continue calling the bar the WC Fields Bar. After some deliberation and member input, the Board of Trustees announced that, given the proximity of the William W. Larsen Memorial Library, effective in September the bar (and performing venue) will be called “The Library Bar.”

More Soap

The annual—and very popular—Soapy Smith Night takes place on July 8. The event, which includes gambling (with “Soapy Dollars” and games such as faro, roulette, and more), costumes, and an auction, benefits the Dai Vernon Foundation. $10 per person at the door, and that gets you $100 in Soapy Dollars for your “sporting activities.” All members and guests welcome. 6:00PM in the Inner Circle.

The Cowboy Thing Just a Metaphor This Time

The summer Strolling Showdown takes place on July 17 in the Inner Circle. This is very popular—and very loud—so interested parties need to work for the information: see page 22 of the July newsletter.

Fooorrre!!!

Also benefitting the Vernon Foundation, the annual AMA Golf Tournament will be held on August 13 at Brookside Golf & Country Club. See page 10 of the July newsletter for information.

Jazz’n it Up

The “Hot Summer Nights” jazz event continues, with the July gig being held on July 18 at 7:30PM in the Inner Circle. Free to all members and guests. This month the Castle’s little “jazz club” features Femi Knight and the Bill Cunliffe Trio.

It’s Not Really Magic, But …

Jon Stetson will host a book signing and Q&A with Todd Fisher—the brother of Carrie Fisher—who will be discussing his new book, My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie. All members welcome. Wednesday, July 25 at 8PM in the Inner Circle.

Connecting

Scott Grossberg will be teaching members techniques on assessing and connecting with audience members (or business colleagues, clients, and customers) in his Perk, “Seeing in the Dark.” 8PM in the Inner Circle on July 31. All members welcome.

Future Stars Week

The annual tribute to the Castle Juniors—when they inhabit all of the showrooms for the whole week—starts on July 23. See the schedule for the list of performers. Young Adults Nights will be held that week as well, on the 23rd and 24th. This is when those between 13 and 20 years of age can enter the club (with an adult member) during regular hours. Get your reservations NOW.

Dear Mr. Pungot:

Thank you for your inquiry about McDonald’s sustainability efforts and the use of plastic straws.

At McDonald’s, we are committed to improving the environmental and social impact of the way food is farmed, produced and served. We are working to maximize the efficiency of our restaurants, create smarter packaging and transform waste into new resources. McDonald’s is resolved to be part of the solution and influence change.

As you stated, plastic pollution is a problem. But it’s also an opportunity for creative thinking and innovation. We continue to work with our suppliers to seek innovative, sustainable packaging designs. It takes a lot of work, effective partnerships and new technologies, and we’re committed to doing it.

Again, thank you for contacting McDonald’s.
