Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (May 2018)

Postby Dustin Stinett » May 2nd, 2018, 3:02 am

SOLD OUT!

Many of the May Member’s Perks and events are already sold out. Take that of you who say “it’s not a club anymore” (you know who you are). These sellouts include the Heitz Cellars gourmet dinner and wine tasting, the “Cinco de Derby” party (combining Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby—so margaritas and mint juleps), and the first member’s Scavenger Hunt. (“Sellout” is a bit of a misnomer since events like the Scavenger Hunt are completely free—it’s just the space that’s limited.)

Other upcoming events include:

May 22: EcoCAR3 Test Drives
May 30: Dueling Pianos
June 5: Magician's Workshop with Rich Cowley (Magician Members only)
June 20: Hot Summer Nights Jazz
June 21: Non-Dining Séances with Zabrecky
June 25: Bingo!
July 8: Soapy Smith Night
July 9: “Presto Beano!” Chili Cook-Off
July 17: Strolling Magic Showdown

Mark your calendars!

Another Schedule Note

The Magic Castle and the AMA offices will be closed Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day.

Lecture Notes

The lecture lineup for May (and early June):

May 6 ... Robert Ramirez
May 13 ... No Lecture (Mothers' Day)
May 20 ... TC Tahoe
May 27 ... Norman Beck
June 3 ... Nicolas Pierri

Lectures free of charge to members and are held Sunday afternoon at 3PM in the Parlour of Prestidigitation. First come-first served (check in at the front desk for a numbered ticket). Members only! No guests allowed.

Not for Profit

The William W. Larsen Memorial Library is now a California nonprofit corporation (501 (c) (3)), which means when you donate to the library—whether books, video, or cash), you can receive a tax deduction. And no, you do not need to be an AMA Member to donate to the library. In case you are wondering about whether or not the WWLML already has the books you are donating, you should know that any duplicates are sold by the library with the funds going directly into its coffers for acquiring new books and other publications. Sometimes a donated book is in better condition that the one already in the library, or perhaps is autographed, or an earlier edition. In cases like this, that book goes into the stacks and the other one goes to the sale shelf. Regardless, every donated book, video, piece of ephemera—everything donated—is listed by contributor in the monthly newsletter supplement. We love our donors!

Pardon our Dust

Starting late last month and running through the summer, with all work expected to be completed by July), the Palace of Mystery is getting a much needed sprucing up. They have started with the air conditioning, which will be three-times more powerful very soon—just in time for the sweltering summer months. (The Parlour will get the Palace’s old unit, which is an upgrade for that room.)

The $300,000 project includes new chairs, curtains, lighting, sound, and AV capability. Being considered is the possibility of raking the back few rows for improved sightlines.

The Palace of Mystery will remain open during all this work.
