Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (March 2018)

Postby Dustin Stinett » March 2nd, 2018, 2:50 am

Their Red Carpet …

The Oscars viewing party is on March 4 in the Inner Circle. Space is still available. Details and a link to the tickets ($45) can be found on page 16 of the March newsletter.

Our Red Carpet

Tickets are going fast for the 50th Annual AMA Awards Show on April 22. That David Copperfield will be there is not hurting ticket sales any, that’s for sure. Once again a Larsen is at the helm: Erika Larsen is producing the show. It will return to the beautiful Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Larry Wilmore is hosting and David will be accepting two awards that night. Besides Magician of the Decade, he will be receiving the AMA’s highest honor: the Masters Fellowship. This show is expected to be a sellout. You do NOT have to be a member of the AMA to attend. And the ticket includes the after-party at the Castle! Tickets can be had at http://www.magiccastle.com/awardsshow2018/

I’m Not the Guy to Ask …

Apparently there will be a new magic-oriented television program starting next week called Deception. I’m not sure why I’m mentioning this since the viewing party on March 6 at the Castle is already sold out. (Now I need to find out what all the hubbub’s about. I am fascinated by the fact that the Oscars party, on a weekend, still has space available, but this—on a weeknight—sold out within days of its announcement. Is that a hint about the level of interest in the Oscars these days?)

That Magic Word I Learned in Church …

BINGO! Yes, The Magic Castle is having a Bingo night. March 13 in the Inner Circle, hosted by Bingo Boy and Roxy Wood, and … wait for it … is sold out! So if you want to attend, contact Ben Roman to see if there are any cancellations.

Anything We CAN Go To, Dustin?!?

Yes! Rich Cowley is holding another of his popular Workshops on March 6. Magician Members only. 7:30 in the Inner Circle. Once again there will be a mystery guest who will attend and perform. And YOU can perform and hear input from members.

Strollin’ Strollin’ Strollin’, Get Them Doggies Strollin’

The spring Strolling Magic Showdown is on March 20. This is now an immensely popular event. If you have a real interest in performing, judging, or just enjoying all the magic {and the crazy din that accompanies it all), see page 26 of the March newsletter for the details.

Puzzling …

The VERY popular Puzzle Hunt hosted by David Kwong is back and will take place on March 28. These book up FAST as well, so see page 26 for the details (that’s right, you have to be serious about going, so I make you work for it).

All’s Faire

The Academy of Magical Arts has quite a few standing committees. These are necessary in an organization like this one where volunteers make this whole thing work. If you think you might be interested in joining on of them, come to the Volunteer Faire on March 26. It starts at 8PM in the Inner Circle. Committee members will be on hand at their various stations and will discuss the duties and tasks expected of the volunteers. It’s a wonderful way to get more involved in the AMA.

Just For the Kids … Sort of (the Adults Will Like it Too)

The popular Young Adults Nights—when people ages 13 and up are allowed into the club during evening hours—are on March 26 and 27. Get reservations NOW. But here’s the REALLY cool thing. As an experiment, on Monday, March 26 only, there will be three Non-Dining Houdini Séances, and yes, the young adults will be allowed in. This is a first, and could be a unique opportunity as there is no guarantee it will happen again. Tickets are $35 each, and there will be three shows only. More details can be found on page 14 of the newsletter. So there.

The Easter Bunny Hops to Town

The Easter Bunny will make his annual appearance of Easter (April 1: no foolin’). He’s there during brunch, but brunch reservations are not required for members and their kids (grandkids, et al). There will be an Eater Egg Hunt, face painting, the Big Bunny His-Own-Self, and more. Festivities start at 11AM in the Inner Circle.

Schedule Note

The Castle will be closed for a buyout on the evening of March 15. No walk-ins and guest passes will not be honored.

Lecture Notes

There are only three lectures this month because the Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 25. In the meantime, there is PLENTY of great magic to be had with …

March 3 ... Murray Hatfield & Teresa: “Five Basic Elements of Building a Show”

March 11 ... Bryan Miles & Stuart Lightbody: “Sleightly Mental”

March 18 ... Eric Jones: “The Devil Is In the Details”

The Annual General Meeting of the Membership

The AGM is a big deal. It is the day that the state of the organization is discussed by members of the leadership team and the new Boards of Directors and Trustees are announced. The meeting starts at 4PM in the Palace of Mystery. All members are welcome (and a quorum is required!). If you are unable to attend, the meeting will be streamed live on the AMA’s Facebook page. See you there.

What's the deal with "APRIL 16-22 Jonathan Pendragon Farewell Week"? Is he formally retiring?
(The only time I ever saw him work at the Magic Castle was in the Close-up Room. Although not what he's known for, he was quite good.)

Sorry for the late reply, Bill. He has told me he is hanging them up, at least as far as working the stage goes. I cannot imagine Jonathan being able to do that, but perhaps doing close-up now and then, which he says he might do, will satisfy the artist in him.
